Update on Anambra: LG results announced by INEC

The Independent National Election Commission (INEC) has commenced the announcement of the results of the governorship election in Anambra held on Saturday.
Vice-Chancellor of the University of Calabar, Prof. Zana Akpagu, who is the Returning Officer for election said results for 16 local government areas out of 21 LGs of the state in the governorship poll are ready.

Incumbent Governor Willie Obiano and candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance has opened up a huge lead in the Anambra State governorship race.
With official results for seven of the state’s 21 local government areas announced, Mr Obiano has polled twice as much vote as his closest rival.
Based on results from Njikoka, Dunukofia, Awka South, Ayamelum, Anaocha,  Orumba South, and Ekwusigo LGAs, the incumbent governor has so far polled 87,026 votes, which is 48,158 votes more than his closest rival, Mr Tony Nwoye of the All Progressives Congress.
Mr Nwoye secured 38,868 votes from the seven local government areas.
Peoples Democratic Candidate, Mr Oseloka Obaze, is currently third in the race with 25,506 votes from the seven LGAs with UPP candidate and former Aviation Minister, Mr Osita Chidoka, trailing far behind.

'Students among dead' in Jordan flash floods

At least seven people have been killed and 16 more are missing after flash floods struck an area near the Dead Sea in Jordan, officials say. Most of those killed and missing were students on a trip, civil defence sources said, but this was not confirmed. Prime Minister Omar Razzaz is reported to be overseeing a rescue operation at the Zara Maeen hot springs area. Search teams have so far rescued 11 people, Reuters reported. Some of them are said to be in a serious condition.

Nigeria hunger crises can kill 200 children per day.

  Two hundred children could die each day from hunger in northeastern Nigeria as a result of the ongoing conflict in the country, a humanitarian agency has warned. Up to half of all children under the age of five are acutely malnourished, international charity Save the Children said on Monday, after screening the health of boys and girls in the region between June and October in 2016. The figure could be even worse in areas that are out of reach because of insecurity, according to the report. Children are presenting in desperate conditions and facing severe malnutrition, often in combination with other life-threatening illnesses like pneumonia, malaria and diarrhoea," said Ben Foot, Save the Children country director.
