New AIDS vaccine

Image
South Africa has launched a major clinical trial of an experimental vaccine against the AIDS virus, which scientists hope could be the "final nail in the coffin" for the disease. More than 30 years of efforts to develop an effective vaccine for HIV have not borne fruit, but for the first time since the virus was identified in 1983, scientists said on Wednesday they think they have found a promising candidate.   The new study, known as HVTN 702, will involve more than 5,400 sexually active men and women aged 18-35 in 15 areas around South Africa over four years. It is one of the biggest clinical trials involving the disease ever undertaken and has revived hopes of a breakthrough in the battle against AIDS. "If deployed alongside our current armoury of proven HIV prevention tools, a safe and effective vaccine could be the final nail in the coffin for HIV," said Anthony Fauci, director of the US National institute for Allergies and Infectious Disea...

Black boxes probed after Colombia plane crash killed 71

Image
Aviation investigators launched a probe into the cause of the airplane crash that killed 71 people, including most of Brazil's Chapecoencse football team en route to a cup final in Colombia. Prior to going down, the pilot of the LAMIA Airlines plane radioed that he was running out of fuel and needed to make an emergency landing, before saying that the plane was facing electrical problems, according to Juan Sebastian Upegui, a pilot of another nearby plane. "Mayday mayday ... Help us get to the runway ... Help, help," Upegui described the pilot as saying. "Then it ended ... We all started to cry." Investigators from Brazil flew in to join Colombian counterparts checking two black boxes and cockpit voice recordings from the crash site on a muddy hillside in wooded highlands near La Union town. Bolivia, where the charter company LAMIA was based, and the United Kingdom also sent in experts to help the investigation. The entire Chapocoense fo...

Plane carrying 77 crashes in Colombia

Image
Kickoff was set for Wednesday night. Chapecoense, a Brazilian soccer team representing.    the city's 200,000 residents, would take the field in Medellin against Colombian club Atlético Nacional in the first leg of the Copa Sudamerica final. By now, most of the world knows how this story ends. The chartered Avro RJ85 flying the team, its coaches and guests crashed, killing more than 70 on board. It's an unspeakably tragic conclusion to what most consider a fairy-tale run in one of South America's most prestigious soccer tournaments. But life moves forward. The many tributes continue to pour in. The investigation continues. A team of Brazilian aviation accident prevention specialists, foreign ministry delegates and federal police officers are expected to arrive in Medellin on Wednesday. So too will the mayor of Chapeco, city officials, members of the Brazilian Football Federation, and television broadcasters. They're there to help identify the victims, author...

Nigerian militants set oil pipeline ablaze

Image
Warri - Nigerian militants on Sunday blew up a state-run pipeline in the restive oil producing south, in the latest act of sabotage aimed against the strategic sector, a local official said. "The pipeline popularly known as the Abura line was bombed at about 07:30 on Sunday morning," Ughelli south council chairman Paul Etaiga told AFP. The pipeline is owned by the Nigerian Petroleum Development Company (NPDC) in Delta State. Etaiga said he and security agents had visited the scene of the blast to assess the extent of damage. Local resident Emekpor Emurotu said "we heard the blast this morning followed by a huge ball of fire from the pipeline". Police said fire-fighters had put out the blaze. There was no immediate claim of responsibility but militant group, the Niger Delta Greenland Justice Mandate, has consistently carried out attacks on oil pipelines belonging to the NPDC in the area. Since the start of the year, several activist groups have int...

WILL ZUMA GO TODAY?

Image
The extended ANC NEC meeting is undoubtedly one of the most important political events in South Africa for the past decade, says Prof. Susan Booysen, a lecturer of politics at University of the Witwatersrand. "The extended NEC meeting is certainly not normal and we know that what is unfolding are deliberations at the highest level about the future of the president," she says. "We know what is at stake. We know he'll go in due course, but it is also important to see when he goes. For the first time in almost a decade the NEC is waking up, saying they're seriously considering recalling the president." Booysen says this is significant because the NEC members have to overcome their own hurdles, such as their deep loyalty to President Jacob Zuma. At the same time there is a history of damage caused to the party by recalling President Thabo Mbeki that would be fresh in everyone's minds. Will Zuma be recalled as president today? This is crystal ba...

Volkswagen Bets on New Technology To Bounce Back from Crisis

Image
volkswagen's namesake brand hopes to bounce back from its diesel emissions scandal with a broad restructuring that will mean more battery-powered cars, digital services such as ride-sharing, and more SUVs for the U.S. market. Herbert Diess, the head of the Volkswagen division, unveiled the company's Transform 2025 plan at a news conference Tuesday, saying that "in the coming years, we will fundamentally change Volkswagen. Only a few things will remain as they are." The plan foresees a major shift in focus toward investments in electric-car technology and in software to enable new ways of using and sharing cars. The Volkswagen division alone expects to sell a million electric vehicles a year by 2025. Including the company's other brands, such as SEAT and Skoda, the Volkswagen Group expects to sell up to 3 million electrics by then. Diess said the company would also "massively step up" its capacity to develop software, aiming to create ind...

France's Fillon for the job

Image
Former prime minister Francois Fillon has won the second round of the conservative primary race for next year's presidential election in France after rival Alain Juppe conceded defeat following partial results. With votes from more than a third of 10,228 polling stations counted, Fillon, who went into Sunday's second-round run-off as favourite, had won 68.6 percent of the vote in the head-to-head run-off compared with 31.4 percent for his rival, Juppe, another former prime minister. In his victory speech, Fillon pledged to unite his camp behind a project to carry out deep reforms. "My approach has been understood: France can't bear its decline. It wants truth and it wants action," Fillon told supporters at his campaign headquarter. Fillon's victory will send him into an electoral battle that opinion polls say will boil down finally to a duel with far-right leader Marine Le Pen next May. Fillon, who defied predictions to emerge surprise win...

EU and Turkey in cold war over refugee packed

Image
The head of the European Commission has said that the EU-Turkey refugee deal must be respected. "We made an agreement, it must be respected and it will be," Jean-Claude Juncker, commission chief, said in an interview with Belgium's La Libre Belgique newspaper, published on Saturday. Juncker was commenting on threats by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to end the deal after the European parliament's voted to freeze talks on Turkey's EU membership. "I believe that Erdogan and his government are in the process of 'pre-blaming' Europe for the failure of its accession negotiations," he added. On Friday, Erdogan threatened to walk away from the agreement, a day after the European Parliament angered Ankara by backing a freeze of its EU accession talks. On Saturday, he stepped up his criticism of Europe, warning that Turkey could extend by at least another three months a state of emergency placed since the failed July coup, but which is ...

Cuba set to mourn Castro for nine days

Image
Cuban students waving flags broke into a mass chant of "I am Fidel" to salute Fidel Castro as nine days of mourning began for the Cold War icon, who dominated the island's political life for generations. Alcohol sales were suspended, flags flew at half-staff and shows and concerts were cancelled after his younger brother and successor, President Raul Castro, told the country on Friday that Fidel had died at 10:29pm, without giving a cause of death. Giant rallies are planned in Havana's Revolution Square and in the eastern city of Santiago to honour Castro, who died aged 90, six decades after the brothers set out from Mexico to overthrow the government of Fulgencio Batista. Newspapers on the island of 11 million people were printed in black ink to mourn Fidel, instead of the usual red of the official Communist Party daily Granma, and the blue of Juventud Rebelde (Rebel Youth), the paper of the Communist youth. There was no heightened military o...

Ashley Cole 's LA Galaxy didn't make the postseason, so the English defender has some extra time on his hands. As one does, he's spending some of that time soaking in all of the best soccer matches from his homeland. Donald Trump calls Fidel Castro 'brutal dictator'

Image
Cuba's former leader Fidel Castro was a "brutal dictator", US President-elect Donald Trump has said, hours after the 90-year-old's death was announced. Mr Trump, who takes office in January, said he hoped Cubans could move towards a freer future. Castro came to power in 1959 and ushered in a Communist revolution. He defied the US for decades, surviving many assassination plots. Supporters said he returned Cuba to the people. Critics called him a dictator. His brother Raul, who succeeded him as president, announced his death on state television on Friday night. In a statement, Mr Trump said that while Cuba remained "a totalitarian island, it is my hope that today marks a move away from the horrors endured for too long, and toward a future in which the wonderful Cuban people finally live in the freedom they so richly deserve". The US cut ties with Cuba in 1961 amid rising Cold War tensions and imposed a strict economic embargo which remains ...

Japan plans to build the world's fastest-known supercomputer to help develop cutting edge driverless cars and robots.

Image
he country will spend 19.5 billion yen (£139m) on the computer, which should make 130 quadrillion calculations per second. That is 130 petaflops in scientific parlance. It is part of a government policy to keep up with South Korea and China, currently home to the world's best-performing machine. The country's engineers will be tasked with building the machine as early as next year, sources told Reuters. At 130 petaflops, Japan's computer would be ahead of China's Sunway Taihulight, which is capable of 93 petaflops. "As far as we know, there is nothing out there that is as fast," said Satoshi Sekiguchi, from Japan's National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology, where the computer will be built. Prime Minister Shinzo Abe wants companies and politicians to work more closely so Japan can win...

Aleppo 'faces starvation' amid continued bombardment

At least 39 people, including five children, have been killed in the latest round of air strikes and shelling in and around the Syrian city of Aleppo, Al Jazeera has learnt. Witnesses and activists told Al Jazeera the air strikes on Friday destroyed two women's hospitals in Aleppo and Idlib province, as the renewed government offensive to capture Aleppo city from opposition fighters stretched into its tenth day. Both Syria and Russia have denied involvement in the bombardments. The International Committee of the Red Cross said fuel is critically low in the besieged city, as residents faced a harsh winter without heating and electricity, and escalating food prices. Some residents said meat now costs $50 per kilo, compared to $9 four months ago.

Cuba's Fidel Castro dead aged 90

Image
Fidel Castro, the Cuban revolutionary leader who built a communist state on the doorstep of the US, has died aged 90. Raul Castro, Fidel's brother and current president of Cuba, announced his death on state television in Havana early on Saturday. The leader of the 1959 revolution, which overthrew the US-backed dictator Fulgencio Batista, defied the US efforts to topple him for five decades, before ill health led him to make way for his brother Raul, 84, in 2006. In his final years, Fidel lived in relative seclusion, but occasionally wrote opinion pieces or appeared to meet visiting dignitaries.

He said that the knife, developed by an American professor, will allow a "clear cut of the spinal cord with a minimal impact on the nerves". He told Sky News that he was looking to take the procedure global, saying that "Asia is moving, so expect more news coming out over the next few months" and "the UK is very well poised to do this". Human head transplant becomes even more realistic

Image
An Italian neurosurgeon has moved closer to his goal of transplanting a human head, revealing a virtual reality system that will "prepare patients for life in a new body". Professor Sergio Canavero wants to carry out the operation for the first time next year, saying it could help those paralysed from the neck down to walk again. Valery Spiridonov, a Russian man with a genetic muscle-wasting disease, has volunteered to be the first patient. But putting someone's head onto someone else's body could lead to "unexpected psychological reactions" so US firm Inventum Bioengineering Technologies has created a virtual reality world that it says will help train patients such as Mr Spiridonov. Inventum chief executive Alexander Pavlovcik said the virtual reality system would be used before the surgery to prevent these unexpected reactions. He added: "We are combining the latest advancements in virtual reality to develop the world's firs...

Heavy earthquake of about 6.9-magnitude strikes off Japan

A 6.9-magnitude earthquake struck off Japan's Honshu island on Tuesday, triggering tsunami waves and bringing back traumatic memories for locals of the devastating 2011 Fukushima disaster. Residents in Fukushima Prefecture braced for the worst after a tsunami warning was issued early Tuesday morning -- along the same stretch of coast devastated by enormous waves five years ago. In 2011, a 9.0-magnitude earthquake -- one of the worst ever to hit Japan -- killed more than 20,000 people and caused tsunamis of up to 12 meters (40 feet) which swamped the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, triggering a nuclear meltdown. Tuesday's quake struck close to the epicenter of the 2011 quake, just 37 kilometers (23 miles) east-southeast of Namie at a depth of 11.4 kilometers (7 miles). The quake triggered a tsunami warning in Japan's Fukushima and Miyagi Prefectures, causing the government to urge thousands to seek higher ground amid warnings waves could ...

The state Commissioner of Police, CP, Abubakar Bello, told the Punch that the crime was reported to the police in October, 2016, by the bank. According to him, the matter was then transferred from Karu Divisional Police Headquarters to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, SCIID, Lafia, for investigations. In his confession, the suspect blamed the economic situation for his action, stating that he had never been involved in a criminal act before now. Oko said: “As a cleaner, I knew where all the keys were kept. I single-handedly carried out the operation because I have been working as a cleaner in the bank for the past 10 years and my eyes had been on one of the keys to the vault, where the bank used to keep all its money. “As a cleaner, my attentio...

Check out. Apple offers free replacements of batteries for iPhone 6s

Image
Apple Inc. said it will provide a free battery replacement for customers globally who have experienced an unexpected shutdown with their iPhone 6s smartphones. "Apple has determined that a very small number of iPhone 6s devices may unexpectedly shut down," the company said in a statement on its website Monday morning in Asia. This isn't a safety issue and only affects devices within a limited serial number range that were manufactured in September and October 2015, Apple said. A Chinese consumer-protection group, the China Consumers Association, said last week it had received reports that some iPhones were shutting down even though half their battery life remained. Apple said customers experiencing the problem can visit an Apple retail store or authorized service provider to verify that their device was manufactured during the covered period.

Terrifying accident India train crash kills more than 140

Image
Family members are mourning their lost loved ones as India reels from a deadly train crash. More than 140 people were killed when several train cars derailed in northern Uttar Pradesh early Sunday morning. "All of a sudden there was a massive jerk," Ravindra Pathak said in the aftermath of the deadly derailment. "Our heads collided with the roof of the carriage." Among the passengers were Rakesh Verma and his new wife, as well as other members of their wedding party. "There's a little girl, she's two-and-a-half years old, we can't find her or my mother in the wreck," Verma's brother told CNN affiliate News 18. The train, which links the central Indian city of Indore to the city of Patna in its north east, was halfway through its journey when it went off the track near Kanpur, around 300 miles southeast of New Delhi. After almost an entire day of work, the site of the accident has now been cleared, Ahmed said. In to...

See the new cardinals appointed by Pope Francis.

Image
Pope Francis is showing his love for outsiders again -- this time by turning some of them into the ultimate insiders. He's appointing a batch of new cardinals on Saturday, reshaping the group that will someday choose the next pope. Many of the new men come from lands far distant from Rome: Three are from Africa, two from Asia, one from Oceania, and one from the Middle East. All represent places where the Catholic population is in the minority. Meanwhile, some major cities usually led by a cardinal -- including Los Angeles and Philadelphia -- are being bypassed this time around. Some things will not change. Europe will continue to dominate geographically, and the College of Cardinals isn't getting much younger: The most common age for a cardinal is 83. But in his 3½ years as Pope, Francis has put in place nearly a quarter of the cardinals, the "princes of the Church." (John Paul II still exerts huge influence: Four out of 10 current cardinals were...

Malawi man convicted over 'ritual sex' with 104 women

Image
A Malawi court has convicted an HIV-positive man who had confessed to having sex with 104 girls and widows in traditional "sexual cleansing" rituals. Eric Aniva, 45,  was found guilty on Friday on two counts after a one-day trial in a packed courtroom in the district of Nsanje. "It is clear ... that the state has proved beyond reasonable doubt that the accused was engaging in harmful practices," the magistrate,  Innocent Nebi, said. "I find you guilty and convict you accordingly," he said, adding that sentencing would be on November 22. The verdict did not take into account the man's HIV-positive status, because there was no evidence of any of the girls or women having caught the virus. Custom in some parts of southern Malawi dictates that a man, known as a "hyena", is paid to have sex with bereaved widows to exorcise evil spirits and to prevent other deaths from happening. "I dared to reveal what I have been practising...

iPhone 8 to Sport OLED Display Only in Premium Variant Due to Supply Issues

Image
The iPhone 8 next year is said to come with big changes, the most exciting one being the shift to OLED screens. However, a fresh report says that Apple's suppliers are facing production issues, and this hurdle could force the Cupertino giant to abandon OLED display plans for all of iPhone 8 models - sticking to one. Bloomberg reports that four main suppliers - Samsung, LG, Sharp, and Japan Display - are not ready to produce OLED in a sufficiently large capacity to make screens for all new iPhone models next year. In fact, the companies have said that the production limitations could continue well into 2018 as well. If the production capacity is not met, Apple would be unable to introduce OLED screens in all the iPhone 8 models. The report states that Apple has already sealed an exclusive deal with Samsung for 1 million OLED displays, but it remains unsure whether Samsung will be able to fulfil the demand. The South Korean giant is reportedly having trouble manag...

Malicious Invite Links [Warning] Do Not Click or Share That WhatsApp Video Calling Invite Link - It's Fake

There is almost an equal split between catholic and protestant churches in Enugu. The state hosts two catholic cathedrals: the Holy Ghost Cathedral can be found next to Ogbete Main Market in the city; the other Cathedral in Enugu State is located in Nsukka. Most people are very disciplined to attend church services and it is hard for them to believe in the existence of ‘free thinkers’, i.e. people who do not feel committed to any religion. One of the most important events in Igboland is Christmas and it signifies home return in the village. Even though they live most of the time in the city or somewhere else in Nigeria, Igbo families consider their one and only real home their house in the village. It is the two weeks around Christmas which bring families back together to the village. It is the time to catch up with other family members on what has happened over the year and visit relatives and friends in the neighbourhood. You will find the cities...

Kanye West: I didn't vote but if I did, 'I would have voted for Trump'

Image
Could this be a very early campaign stunt? Hip hop superstar Kanye West, who famously declared his intention to run for President in 2020, told a shocked audience in California that he didn't cast a vote in the presidential election earlier this month, but if he did, he "would have voted for Trump." After the slightly-too-late endorsement for Donald Trump, the shock winner and now-President-elect, given between songs during the show at the SAP Center in San Jose on Thursday night, a large section of the audience booed the singer.

Nigeria hunger crises can kill 200 children per day.

Image
Two hundred children could die each day from hunger in northeastern Nigeria as a result of the ongoing conflict in the country, a humanitarian agency has warned. Up to half of all children under the age of five are acutely malnourished, international charity Save the Children said on Monday, after screening the health of boys and girls in the region between June and October in 2016. The figure could be even worse in areas that are out of reach because of insecurity, according to the report. Children are presenting in desperate conditions and facing severe malnutrition, often in combination with other life-threatening illnesses like pneumonia, malaria and diarrhoea," said Ben Foot, Save the Children country director. "For some cases this may be the second or third time they have fought malnutrition so their immune systems are already severely weakened." Violent attacks on civilians since 2009 by the armed group Boko H...
