Nissan's Ghosn to serve as Mitsubishi Motors chairman

TOKYO -- Nissan Motor President Carlos Ghosn will serve as chairman of scandal-hit Mitsubishi Motors, sources said on Wednesday.

Nissan has asked Osamu Masuko, Mitsubishi's chairman and president, to stay on as president, the sources said.

By the end of the month, Nissan plans to acquire a 34% stake in Mitsubishi, which is struggling in the aftermath of a scandal over false mileage data. The idea is to kick-start the reform process by having Ghosn -- the chief of the Nissan-Renault alliance -- oversee Mitsubishi's management.

Mitsubishi's board is to sign off on the decision after a shareholders meeting in December. 

The data scandal came to light in April, when the company admitted that employees manipulated fuel economy information for its minicars.

With the planned investment, Mitsubishi will effectively join the Nissan group.

Ghosn, who will be directly involved in running Mitsubishi, will work to change the automaker's culture and explore synergies.

Rolls-Royce reports record loss of £4.6bn

A bribery settlement and the fall in the pound have pushed engineering giant Rolls-Royce to a record loss. The jet engine maker reported a loss before tax of £4.6bn for 2016. However, once one-off costs have been stripped out, the company's underlying profit was better than many experts had predicted. Rolls-Royce agreed to pay £671m to settle corruption cases with UK and US authorities and it has written off £4.4bn from currency related contracts. Underlying profits fell to £813m, down from £1.4bn the previous year, although the fall was much less than many analysts had forecast. Rolls-Royce Holdings Rolls-Royce, which has been a completely separate company to the car-maker since 1971, said the outlook for this year was for a "modest performance improvement", while chief executive Warren East said more needed to be done to improve profit margins.
