Genoa bridge: Renzo Piano volunteers design idea

Image
Renowned Italian architect Renzo Piano has offered to help design a new Genoa bridge to replace the one that collapsed, killing 43 people. A native of the city, Piano was already involved in redesigning a 2km (1.2-mile) stretch of its waterfront. Regional governor Giovanni Toti said: "We have gladly accepted the help, and he's already made some proposals." A section of the 51-year-old Morandi bridge fell down on 14 August, crushing vehicles and buildings underneath. It has since emerged the 1.2km bridge had been slowly decaying for decades. 'Rebirth and redemption' Piano presented his idea to Mr Toti, governor of Liguria, and Genoa mayor Marco Bucci on Tuesday. The 80-year-old insisted the new bridge should be constructed "soon, but not in a rush", reflecting the "genuine nature and qualities of the Genoese". Piano is best known for designing buildings such as London's Shard, the Pompidou Centre in Paris with Richard Rog...

Hurricane Maria: Puerto Rico mayor derides Trump actions

Image
The mayor of the Puerto Rican capital San Juan says President Donald Trump's response to the hurricane that devastated the US territory last year is a "stain on his presidency". Carmen Yulin Cruz's comments came a day after officials said 2,975 people had died in Puerto Rico following Hurricane Maria last September. The revised death toll is nearly 50 times the previous estimate of 64. "The Trump administration killed the Puerto Rican with neglect," she said. Speaking to CNN, she added: "The Trump administration led us to believe that they were helping when they weren't really up to par." The territory has struggled to repair its infrastructure and power grid since the storm, and is asking US Congress for $139bn (£108bn) in recovery funds. Ms Cruz criticised Mr Trump personally for his response to the crisis, referencing a photo op during which the president threw rolls of paper towels to a crowd of hurricane survivors. ...

Elon Musk reignites Twitter slur controversy

Image
Elon Musk has tweeted again about a man he had previously accused of being a child abuser. "You don't think it's strange he hasn't sued me? He was offered free legal services," Tesla's chief posted. The tweet comes more than a month after Mr Musk apologised to the British diving expert Vern Unsworth for calling him a "pedo". Critics suggest the latest message is further evidence of the tech leader's erratic behaviour on social media. Mr Unsworth has told the BBC that he does not want to say anything at this stage. Tesla's shares fell about 1.5% in early trade despite the Nasdaq, on which it trades, opening higher. Twitter storm Mr Musk has been embroiled in another Twitter-related controversy over recent weeks after tweeting that he was considering taking his car firm private, adding that he had secured the funds required. That caused major swings in the company's share price and subsequent claims that his message had bee...

Russia's Putin softens pension reforms after outcry

Image
Russian leader Vladimir Putin has softened planned pension changes following angry protests and a slump in his approval rating. He said the retirement age for women would be increased from 55 to 60 instead of to 63. But a five-year increase for men, to 65, would stay. In a rare TV address, Mr Putin said the country's working-age population was shrinking, making change essential. Unions have warned that many will not live long enough to claim a pension. Russian men have a life expectancy of 66 while for women it is 77, the World Health Organization says. The issue has seen support for Mr Putin fall to 64% from 80%, according to VTsIOM state pollster. Mr Putin said the move to raise the retirement age for men and women had been delayed for years and risked causing inflation and increasing poverty. Postponing it further would threaten the stability and security of Russian society, he said. "Any further delay would be irresponsible," he said. "Our decisi...

Fishermen in the southern Mexican state of Oaxaca have found about 300 dead sea turtles entangled in fishing nets.

Image
The find comes just days after another 102 olive ridley turtles were found dead in neighbouring Chiapas state. Olive ridley turtles, which lay their eggs on the beaches of a number of Mexican states between May and September, are considered to be facing a high risk of extinction in the wild. The cause of their death is still under investigation. It is not clear whether they got caught in the nets while still alive or were already dead when they became entangled. Experts say they could have been killed by harmful algae, fish hooks or could have suffocated while trapped in the nets. Mexico banned the capture of sea turtles in 1990 and there are stiff penalties for anyone killing them. A specialised federal attorney is investigating the case.

Wiesbaden in Germany removes gold statue of Turkey's President Erdogan

Image
The German city of Wiesbaden has removed a 4m (13ft) golden statue of Turkey's president after it was defaced with the words "Turkish Hitler". The statue of Recep Tayyip Erdogan was installed in a square as part of Wiesbaden's Biennale arts festival. Organisers said they had hoped it would spark discussions linked to this year's theme - "bad news". Instead, it prompted conflict between Mr Erdogan's supporters and critics. Firefighters moved it on Tuesday night. City councillor Oliver Franz told the Wiesbadener Kurier newspaper that angry words had escalated into physical scuffles, and "bladed weapons were spotted". "In agreement with state police, Mayor Sven Gerich decided to have the statue removed as security could no longer be guaranteed," the city's government tweeted. ...

Germany returns skulls of Namibian genocide victims

Image
Germany has handed back the human remains of indigenous people killed during a genocide in colonial Namibia more than 100 years ago. A Namibian government delegation received the skulls at a church service in the capital, Berlin. The bones had been sent to Germany for now-discredited research to prove the racial superiority of white Europeans. Tens of thousands of Herero and Nama people were murdered in response to an anti-colonial uprising. Their descendants are still waiting for an apology from the German government. Why was an extermination order issued? The genocide began in 1904 after a Herero and Nama rebellion in response to the German expropriation of their land and cattle. The head of the military administration in what was then known as German South West Africa, Lothar von Trotha, issued an extermination order in October 1904. The Herero and Nama were forced into the desert and any who were found trying to return to their land were either killed or put into...

Trump warns of 'left-wing violence' if Democrats win mid-term elections

Image
US President Donald Trump has warned that his policies will be "violently" overturned if the Democrats win November's mid-term elections. He told Evangelical leaders that the vote was a "referendum" on freedom of speech and religion, and that these were threatened by "violent people". He appealed to conservative Christian groups for help, saying they were one vote away from "losing everything". Mid-term elections are widely seen as a test of the president's popularity. Mr Trump has been battling negative publicity after his ex-lawyer and former campaign chief were convicted earlier this month. An audio recording of Mr Trump's closed-door meeting with Evangelical leaders at the White House was leaked to US media. During the meeting, Mr Trump said the mid-term elections were not just a referendum on him but also "on your religion, it's a referendum on free speech and the First Amendment [guaranteeing basic freed...

Manchester City's Leroy Sane returns to Germany squad but Sami Khedira dropped

Image
Manchester City's Leroy Sane returns to the Germany squad for next month's matches against France and Peru, but there is no place for Juventus midfielder Sami Khedira. Sane was a surprise omission from the squad that, as holders, crashed out of the World Cup in the group stage. "I spoke to Leroy on that day [of the World Cup squad announcement]", coach Joachim Low told a news conference. "I told him that his national team future must begin after the World Cup, that we are aware of his qualities. "We wanted to take an intensive look at his style of play after the World Cup." Low said Khedira could win a return to the squad through his club performances, adding: "I had a longer conversation with him. He told me that you don't retire from the national team. "He was always proud to play for Germany. I told him that I now want to make space for new players in that position." Five players from the 2014 World Cup-winning te...

Yaya Toure set for Olympiakos move after 'London medical' agent talk - sources

Image
Former Manchester City midfielder Yaya Toure is closing on a move to Olympiakos, sources close to the Greek club have told ESPN FC. Toure, 35, is a free agent after leaving City at the end of his contract and looks set to return to Olympiakos, where he played in 2005-06 before moving to Monaco. Olympiakos are looking to win back the Greek title from AEK Athens after finishing third last term and see Toure's experience and profile as key qualities. The club are currently in England as they prepare for the second leg of their Europa League qualifier against Burnley, which they lead 3-1, on Thursday. Earlier, Toure's agent Dimitry Seluk claimed the midfielder had passed a medical in London on Tuesday, leading to speculation that he was about to sign for a club in the English capital. Toure won three Premier League titles, three League Cups and an FA Cup in 315 appearances for Manchester City, scoring 79 goals for the club after joining from Barcelona in 2010.

Manchester United's issues mean season could be endured, not enjoyed

Image
It doesn't look good for Manchester United, does it? There have been two defeats in the opening three Premier League games for the first time in 26 years, while it had been 49 since seven or more goals were conceded in the same period. When United began 1992-93 badly, they could at least go out and buy Eric Cantona in November; transfer windows mean an equivalent move now is impossible. The 2014-15 campaign began with a defeat and two draws, after which the club signed Radamel Falcao and Angel Di Maria before the end-of-August deadline. It lifted spirits among fans at the time but, in hindsight, how well planned were those signings? Losing 3-0 at home, as United did against Tottenham on Monday, is indefensible for any football club, but manager Jose Mourinho tried to defend his team and was right to do so. It is true that the players were more aggressive than against Brighton and played well in the first half, though there appeared to be metal in the ball and a ma...

Lucas Moura strikes twice as Tottenham pile on Manchester United's woe

Image
Tottenham piled on more woe for Manchester United, running out 3-0 winners at Old Trafford on Monday night to hand the hosts a second Premier League defeat in as many weeks. Jose Mourinho's side was under pressure to get a win following last Sunday's 3-2 loss to Brighton and Fred nearly gave them a dream start when he chested down a loose ball in Spurs' penalty area and fired a low volley into the side netting. Romelu Lukaku then spurned another golden chance at the United opener after 15 minutes when he fired wide of an open net after a poor back pass from Danny Rose allowed the Belgium international to round Hugo Lloris. Luke Shaw was next to set up Lukaku, chasing down a long ball and cutting a pass back to the former Chelsea player only to see him scuff his first-time attempt right at Lloris. Harry Kane was shown a deserved yellow card as the match neared the 25-minute mark for a sliding studs-up challenge on Antonio Valencia. Dele Alli bl...

Nicky Verstappen: Suspect held over Dutch boy's 1998 death

Image
Dutch police investigating the death of schoolboy Nicky Verstappen in 1998 say their prime suspect has been arrested in northern Spain. Jos Brech was identified as a suspect after the Netherlands' biggest ever DNA harvesting operation, which included his relatives. It gave police a vital clue linking him to DNA on Nicky Verstappen's clothes. Mr Brech is due to be extradited to his home country, where he faces charges of kidnapping, sexual assault and murder. "Jos B, 55, a suspect in the death of Nicky Verstappen was arrested in Spain on Sunday afternoon. He was taken into custody and will be handed over to the Netherlands," said a statement from police in Limburg, the southern Dutch province where the boy disappeared. The arrest follows a public appeal last week, during which detectives shared photographs of the suspect. A Dutchman living in Spain recognised the man in the photos and tipped off police. Nicky, then aged 11, was at a summer camp in ...

Senator John McCain discontinuing cancer treatment

Image
US Republican Senator John McCain will no longer be continuing treatment for his brain cancer, his family has announced. Mr McCain, 81, was diagnosed with an aggressive form of brain tumour last summer and had been undergoing treatment since July 2017. He left Washington to be with his family in Arizona, though he has still been a vocal political figure. He has, at times, been a fierce critic of President Donald Trump. Who is Senator John McCain? His family said in a statement shared with US media: "Last year, Senator John McCain shared with Americans the news our family already knew: he had been diagnosed with an aggressive glioblastoma, and the prognosis was serious." "In the year since, John has surpassed expectations for his survival. But the progress of disease and the inexorable advance of age render their verdict. "With his usual strength of will, he has chosen to discontinue medical treatment." John McCain at the Naval Academy at ...

Cristiano Ronaldo not guaranteed a start at Juventus - Massimiliano Allegri

Image
Juventus boss Massilimano Allegri has warned there will be times when Cristiano Ronaldo finds himself on the bench. The five-time Ballon d'Or winner joined the Bianconeri for a club record €100 million deal this summer. While Allegri has confirmed Ronaldo will make his home debut in Saturday's clash with Lazio, he assured the former Real Madrid superstar he will have to start some matches as a sub. "There will be times when he [Ronaldo] is on the bench and then just plays half an hour," Allegri said. "Even he will need a break at some point. "In Madrid, he managed himself excellently. Now [against Lazio] he will play, then we will see." Allegri used three different systems throughout the opening match against Chievo -- starting with a 4-2-3-1 before moving to a 4-3-3 after half-time and the ending the match in a 3-5-2 formation. Juventus eventually won 3-2 with a stoppage time winner from Federico Bernardeschi, and Allegri believes his ...

Tottenham's Hugo Lloris arrested in London, charged with drunken driving

Image
Tottenham Hotspur captain and goalkeeper Hugo Lloris was arrested in central London on Friday morning and charged with drunken driving after failing a roadside breathalyser test, police said. Lloris, 31, was stopped at around 2:20 a.m. and was taken to Charing Cross police station, where he was formally charged before being released on bail. According to the Metropolitan Police, Lloris is due to appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court on Sept. 11. The goalkeeper joined Tottenham in 2012 and has started both of their Premier League games this season after winning the World Cup with France. A Metropolitan Police spokesman said: "A man has been charged following a routine patrol stop in Gloucester Place, W1. "Hugo Lloris, 31, of East Finchley was charged with drink driving on Friday, 24 August. He has been bailed to return to Westminster Magistrates' Court on Tuesday, 11 September." The news emerged only after Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettin...

Eden Hazard, Mateo Kovacic in line to start for Chelsea at Newcastle

Image
Eden Hazard and Mateo Kovacic could make their first Chelsea starts against Newcastle on Sunday, head coach Maurizio Sarri confirmed. Both men came off the substitutes' bench to make a decisive impact as Chelsea beat Arsenal 3-2 at Stamford Bridge last Saturday, with Hazard creating the winning goal for Marcos Alonso and Kovacic completing all of his 43 attempted passes in an energetic cameo. Asked if Hazard will start against Newcastle, Sarri said: "I don't know. I think that Eden is ready for 50-60 minutes. I don't know for 90 minutes, but he can start. "I am happy with him. He wants to play. I think it's the right way to think for him. But I have to think for everybody. "I think Mateo and Eden played very well in the last 30 minutes, but I think also that, in that moment, the intensity of the match was going down. But I think, like Eden, Mateo is ready to play for 60 or 65 minutes." Sarri also reiterated that there is no chance ...

Japan's first woman fighter pilot to blaze a trail in skies

Image
A Japanese woman will be flying through the glass ceiling as she becomes her country's first female fighter pilot. First Lieutenant Misa Matsushima, 26, will begin duty on Friday having completed her training to fly F-15s, Japan's military has announced. "As the first female (fighter) pilot, I will open the way," she told reporters. Japan's air force began recruiting women in 1993 - except as fighter jet and reconnaissance aircraft pilots. It lifted that final ban in late 2015. "Ever since I saw the movie Top Gun when I was in primary school, I have always admired fighter jet pilots," the graduate of Japan's National Defence Academy told journalists. "I wish to continue to work hard to fulfil my duty - not just for myself but also for women who will follow this path in the future." Three other women are currently training to join the elite group of fighter pilots. The F-15J fighter jets they will pilot are twin-engine ai...

Woman sues US border agents over seized iPhone

Image
An American woman who had her phone seized by border agents as she returned home to the United States is suing the country's border protection agency. Rejhane Lazoja was stopped at Newark airport, New Jersey, after returning from a trip to Switzerland in February. Her iPhone was seized by agents after she refused to unlock it for them. The lawsuit alleges that border agents took a copy of the data on her smartphone and failed to say whether it had been deleted. According to legal documents, US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) kept the phone for more than 120 days before returning it to Ms Lazoja. She alleges the agency failed to confirm whether it had taken a copy of her data, and whether that data had been shared with any other agencies. The smartphone contained photographs of Ms Lazoja "in a state of undress", as well as private messages from her lawyer. "Ms Lazoja is a Muslim woman and wears a hijab (a headscarf) in accordance with her religi...

Ebola treatment challenged by DR Congo rebel activity

Image
Rebel activity round a town in the Democratic Republic of Congo is complicating the battle against Ebola, the World Health Organization says. The WHO's Peter Salama spoke of "extremely serious security concerns" round the eastern town of Oicha. It is encircled by a feared Ugandan Islamist militia, the Allied Democratic Forces - a "dreaded" scenario, he said. An Ebola outbreak erupted in the region on 1 August, with 63 deaths to date. The militia has been blamed for a series of killings and kidnappings, including of foreigners, the WHO warns. The WHO's concerns have been compounded as it emerged that a doctor infected with Ebola is among those trapped in Oicha. "So for the first time really we have a confirmed case and contacts in an area of very high insecurity," said Dr Salama, WHO's emergency response chief in Geneva. "It really was the problem we were anticipating and the problem at same time that we were dreading....

VAR use in Champions League latter stages being considered by UEFA

Image
UEFA has confirmed it is considering the possibility of implementing Video Assistant Referee's (VARs) in the Champions League, with sources telling ESPN FC that it could be introduced for this season's quarterfinals. The VAR system is already used in several top-flight leagues around the world and was used at the 2018 World Cup finals in Russia. After the story was first reported by The Times, sources have told ESPN FC that UEFA's Competition Committee -- now a joint-venture between UEFA and the European Club Association -- has VAR on the agenda for its meeting on Monday in Monaco. "UEFA is constantly looking at ways in which it can improve its competitions and we are looking closely at the implementation of video assistant referees that are currently being trialled in various competitions," an official statement from European football's governing body read. UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin, who was formally nominated for re-election this wee...

Burnley fan stabbed, 4 others injured at Europa League match in Athens

Image
A Burnley fan was stabbed in the leg and four others were injured in clashes before Thursday's 3-1 Europa League playoff defeat by Olympiakos in Athens, the Premier League club said. The BBC reported that 23 Burnley fans were arrested for being drunk and disorderly. The club said the majority of their 900 travelling supporters were "impeccably behaved." "However, five of our supporters were unfortunately injured - including a person who received a stab wound to the leg -- and received medical attention at the stadium," Burnley said. "Those injured all travelled independently to the stadium, outside the organised travel operation." The defeat was Burnley's first of the Europa qualifying campaign. Chris Wood's first-half penalty cancelled out Kostas Fortounis' opener before Andreas Bouchalakis put the hosts ahead after the break and Fortounis scored his second.
