Ox rejects Chelsea move

Image
Arsenal's Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has turned down a chance to move to Chelsea and would prefer to move to Liverpool or stay at the Emirates, according to a BBC report. Oxlade-Chamberlain, 24, was the subject of a bid from Chelsea on Monday, with an ESPN FC source confirming that a fee had been agreed to bring the attacking midfielder and wing-back to Stamford Bridge. However, the BBC reported on Tuesday night that the England international has rejected a £40 million move to join Antonio Conte's team because he wants to be used a central midfielder and not at wing-back, where he believes Chelsea envision using him. In another revelation from the report, Oxlade-Chamberlain would apparently prefer a move to Liverpool over Chelsea in order to get his chance to play in his preferred role, with Jurgen Klopp's team expected to make a bid before Thursday's end to the summer window.

Arsenal reject Alexis Sanchez bid

Image
Arsenal have turned down a massive £50m offer from Manchester City for Alexis Sanchez, but the Gunners remain unchanged on their position that the Chilean is not for sale. Arsenal risk losing the former Barcelona star on a free transfer next summer, but £50m is not enough, neither is Raheem Sterling and £30m. With less than 48 hours until the deadline, the Gunners face the very real prospect of losing Sanchez for free in 2018. The Mirror, as well as the BBC's David Ornstein, believe only huge money, or perhaps a player in exchange, can persuade the Gunners into a sale, with £70m floated as the figure that would be appropriate to sell at. The whispers of discontent are crescendoing into a dull roar at the Emirates, if the Telegraph is to be believed. The paper reports that the "majority of the first-team squad have now had enough of Sanchez and the saga regarding his future.

Trump in Saudi Arabia: First foreign trip starts as home troubles mount

Image
The US has signed its largest ever arms deal with Saudi Arabia as US President Donald Trump's first foreign trip begins in Riyadh. Mr Trump and his wife Melania were greeted in the Saudi capital by King Salman on Saturday morning local time. The eight-day trip will also take in Israel, the Palestinian territories, Brussels, the Vatican, and Sicily. The visit comes as Mr Trump faces uproar at home following his sacking of FBI director James Comey. He has strongly criticised the decision to appoint a special counsel to oversee an inquiry into alleged Russian influence on the US election. US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said the arms deal was aimed at countering the "malign" influence of Iran. "The package of defence equipment and services supports the long-term security of Saudi Arabia and the entire Gulf region," he told a news conference in Riyadh. Mr Trump is accompanied on his visit by his daughter Ivanka, an unpaid White House adviser, and...

The UK's richest 1,000 people "kept calm and carried on making billions" amid the Brexit vote of 2016, according to the Sunday Times Rich List.Their wealth rose by 14% over the past year to a record £658bn, it shows. Brothers Sri and Gopi Hinduja, who invest in property, healthcare and oil and gas, top this year's list with £16.2bn - up £3.2bn on 2016. The list includes a record number of British billionaires - 134 - with 14 new ones emerging over the last year. List compiler Robert Watts said: "While many of us worried about the outcome of the EU referendum, many of Britain's richest people just kept calm and carried on making billions." He said a revived stock market had been behind the surge in wealth for the super-rich. 'Equities soared' "We expected to see a chilling effect in the run-up to the EU referendum, but that simply did not materialise," Mr Watts said. "A buoyant stock market usually drives the wealth o...

Nicki Minaj says she'll pay college tuition fees for fans

Image
Nicki Minaj says she'll pay college tuition fees for fans if they can prove they got straight A's. Responding to dozens of requests on Twitter asking for help with money, she said she'll do it again in the future. People sent her screengrabs of report cards and stories of their financial troubles. The majority of the pleas were for less than $1,000 (£770) but she seemed to agree to pay $6,000 (£4600) to one student if he could be prove what it was for. The fan, called Josh, said it was for tuition fees, accommodation, food and books. She joked that if she didn't stop with the donations she wouldn't have "any money left". Around 30 fans were chosen. Earlier this year, Chance The Rapper donated $1m (£870,00) to schools in Chicago for "arts and enrichment programming". Kenyan $2m jackpot winner Abisai doubts he will bet again

Image
A Kenyan punter who won a $2m (£1.6m) jackpot after correctly predicting the outcome of 17 football matches doubts he will ever bet again. Samuel Abisai, 28, won the jackpot after placing about $2 on two separate picks, betting firm SportPesa says. Mr Abisai plans to give some of his winnings back to society, including supporting his local football team in the western region of Kakamega. The payout is reportedly one of the biggest ever paid in Kenya. The average salary of a civil servant in Kenya is about $150 per month. Kenyans are the biggest gamblers in sub-Saharan Africa. Three-quarters of 17-to-35 year olds in Kenya admit to having placed a bet, according to a recent survey. Gambling on phone apps is easy, so many Kenyans regularly make payments through their mobile phones. The government is worried - and has just slapped a 50% tax on bookmakers, lottery companies and sports betting sites. Mr Abisai is, however, not affected as the taxation comes into effect next...

Paris art dealer 'forgets' €1.5m picture in taxi

Image
An artwork worth €1.5m ($1.6m; £1.25m) has been found after it was accidentally left in a taxi in Paris. A French art dealer, who has not been identified by police, filed a theft report after forgetting the picture in the cab's boot on Thursday. He reportedly became distracted by a call on his mobile and only noticed he no longer had the picture the next day. The work is Concetto Spaziale (Spatial concept) by Argentina-born Italian artist Lucio Fontana, who died in 1968. The dealer had been making his way to a modern art gallery in Paris's third arrondissement. He tried to locate the taxi he had used but was unsuccessful and on Saturday went to police, Le Parisien newspaper reported. But the driver returned the work on Tuesday, AFP news agency quoted police as saying. Fontana's picture is one of a series of abstracts he made featuring the piercing of the canvas to create an actual dimension of space and using light. The artist became known for founding the s...

Syria war: Many dead in IS attack on displaced people's camp

Image
More than 30 civilians and Kurdish-led fighters have been killed in an attack by Islamic State militants near Syria's north-eastern border with Iraq. They targeted a makeshift camp for displaced Syrians and Iraqi refugees at Rajm al-Salibi, near the town of Shaddadi in Hassakeh province. The militants also also clashed with members of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) stationed at a nearby checkpoint. The US-backed alliance is spearheading the battle against IS in eastern Syria. Its Kurdish and Arab fighters are close to taking control of the strategically important Euphrates River Valley town of Tabqa and will soon launch an offensive to retake the de facto IS capital of Raqqa. At least five IS suicide bombers blew themselves up outside and inside the camp at Rajm al-Salibi, south-east of the town of Shaddadi, at dawn on Tuesday, the Syrian Observatory, a UK-based monitoring group, reports. ...

How to workout at home

Image
Going to the gym isn’t for everyone. The costs can be high, you may find it hard to get to a convenient location or you may feel self-conscious if you’re new to exercise.  Regular moderate exercise is vital for reducing cardiovascular health risks, managing your weight and fat content and preventing back and joint problems. The increase in muscle to fat ratio also helps your body burn more calories and boosts your metabolism. It is generally much harder to manage your weight long-term without exercise. There are exercises that can be done at home to achieve all fitness goals including cardiovascular fitness, fat burning, strength, endurance, core strength and stability. They don’t require any equipment because your bodyweight is more than enough resistance to achieve most fitness objectives. Because they are “compound exercises” (using many muscle groups simultaneously), you burn more calories per minute and a full-body workout takes far less tim...

Arrests as Newcastle and West Ham raided in £5m tax probe

Image
Newcastle United and West Ham United's grounds have been raided in a fraud investigation. It is understood Newcastle's managing director Lee Charnley was among "several men within professional football" who were arrested. HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) said it had deployed 180 officers across the UK and France. The BBC understands the suspected income tax and National Insurance fraud amounts to £5m. HMRC said it searched premises in the north east and south east of England, and seized business records, financial records, computers and mobile phones. West Ham's London Olympic Stadium and Newcastle's St James' Park were among the locations raided. HMRC officers also visited offices belonging to Chelsea FC "in connection with its wider investigation", a club spokesman confirmed. But it is understood the club's premises were not raided and no arrests were made. "HMRC has requested certain information which the club will prov...

Manchester City: No referee would be better for Manchester derby, says Yaya Toure

Image
Manchester City midfielder Yaya Toure would prefer to play "without a referee" in Thursday's derby with Manchester United after criticising the standard of officiating in the FA Cup semi-final defeat by Arsenal. Referee Craig Pawson ruled out Sergio Aguero's first-half strike at Wembley. Replays suggested the goal should have stood and City went on to lose the game 2-1 after extra time. "I think the referees have to stop this," said Toure. "I am very disappointed. It is not the first time, there have been a couple of times. "Maybe on Thursday we are going to have a better referee or maybe play without a referee - I'd prefer that." Officials ruled that Leroy Sane's cross had gone out of play before reaching Aguero. The Argentina striker later did score to put City ahead but goals from Nacho Monreal and Alexis Sanchez sent Arsenal into May's FA Cup final, where they will meet Chelsea. Defeat means City's focus sw...

Arsene Wenger: Arsenal answered their critics in FA Cup win over Manchester City

Image
Arsene Wenger believes Arsenal answered their critics with a "strong and united" performance as they beat Manchester City to reach a third FA Cup final in four years. Alexis Sanchez scored an extra-time winner as the Gunners came from behind to win 2-1 and reach a record 20th final - and an eighth under Wenger. "People questioned us, we went through tough times," Wenger said. "You can be divided or united and we have shown the right response." Wenger, 67, has come under more scrutiny this season than at any other time in his 21-year reign at Arsenal, with the Gunners lying in seventh place in the Premier League and on the receiving end of a 10-2 aggregate thrashing by Bayern Munich in the Champions League. The Frenchman is out of contract at the end of the season and has been offered a new two-year deal, although he is yet to announce whether he will continue. Some sections of Arsenal fans have protested against Wenger in recent months,...

Tottenham's Dele Alli won the young player prize for the second successive year. Manchester City's Lucy Bronze won the Women's Player of the Year award. Birmingham's Jess Carter was named Women's Young Player of the Year. Kante said: "It's a huge honour to be chosen by the other players. It's the biggest honour to get this award." The midfielder is on course to win the Premier League with Chelsea, having done so last season at Leicester, and added: "My first two seasons were very beautiful. Last season was very beautiful. This season so far, we have had a good season but we have to finish well." Former England captain David Beckham received the PFA's Merit award for his contribution to the game during the ceremony at the Grosvenor Hotel in London on Sunday. Former England women...

Nigerian Manchester United fans electrocuted watching match in Cal

Image
At least seven people have died after an electric cable fell on fans watching a Manchester United match on TV in Nigeria, police say. The high-tension cable fell on a crowded shack showing the Europa League quarter-final against Anderlecht in the southern city of Calabar. At least 30 people were taken to hospital by local ambulances and police who arrived quickly at the scene. English football has a large and passionate following in Nigeria. Eyewitnesses describe hearing a loud explosion from an electrical transformer which caused the cable to fall. One man told local media that the venue had a roof made out of zinc, which transferred the electricity to those inside. An eyewitness told the BBC he had counted at least 16 bodies at the scene of the accident. It has been reported that scores of fans managed to escape. Manchester United has responded by tweeting its condolences to the victims and their families. Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari has also sent his condol...
