RIP Ricky Jay, American magician and actor, dies

Image
American magician and actor Ricky Jay has died of natural causes in Los Angeles, his manager has confirmed. A 1993 profile of Jay in the New Yorker described him as "perhaps the most gifted sleight-of-hand artist alive", able to baffle even fellow magicians with his skills. The performer also appeared in films like Boogie Nights, Magnolia and Tomorrow Never Dies. Tributes have already begun to flood in from fellow magicians and actors. Penn Jilette, of magic duo Penn & Teller, described him as "one of the best who ever lived", while How I Met Your Mother star Neil Patrick Harris called his death a "profound loss". Born Richard Jay Potash in Brooklyn, Jay did not publicly discuss his childhood, and his date of birth is not exactly known, ranging from 1946 to 1948. He reportedly first performed in public at the age of four, and played a number of comedy clubs and nightclubs - thought to be one of the first magic

Three points from Bournemouth 1-2 Arsenal in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon.

Image
After three draws in a row, Arsenal are back to winning ways in the Premier League and on balance, Sunday's 2-1 victory against a lively Bournemouth side was deserved. They took the lead through a bizarre Jefferson Lerma own goal but were pegged back on the stroke of half-time by Josh King. But Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang's winner brought them back to within a point of the top four and extended their unbeaten run to 17 games in all competitions. An open start brought close shaves and some controversy, too. In the eighth minute, David Brooks tucked the ball past Bernd Leno after a scramble inside the Arsenal box, only to be swiftly flagged offside. The decision looked questionable: one of Brooks' legs seemed level with Shkodran Mustafi, while there was a suggestion he had found possession via another Arsenal defender. Bournemouth's frustration was almost compounded when Lucas Torreira thudded the left upright with a 20-yard drive and watched Alex Iwobi las

Manchester United's Jose Mourinho targets top four by end of the year

Image
Mourinho will have Anthony Martial and Marouane Fellaini available after they missed international duty with France and Belgium respectively. Paul Pogba should also be fit after missing the derby defeat at Manchester City, while Marcus Rashford and Romelu Lukaku could feature after injury. Luke Shaw, however, is suspended after picking up his fifth booking of the season after City. "Martial stayed with us, he didn't go to the national team," Mourinho said. "He worked really hard, he's ready, he plays [against Palace]. Is he ready to play three in a row in the same week? I don't know, but the most important match is the next. "Fellaini also stayed, no national team, they also let him stay in spite of playing 90 minutes against Manchester City. He needed to stay and prepare himself better after such an injury that he had before, so Marouane is also good. "And the boys in the national teams -- Rashford came with a little problem but

Modified Boeing 737 used to fight wildfire for first time

Image
A modified Boeing 737 has been used to fight a wildfire for the first time, Australian authorities say. The former passenger jet was deployed as a water-bombing aircraft in New South Wales on Thursday and Friday. It can carry more than 15,000 litres (4,000 gallons) of water and fire retardant - a large amount, though less than some other water-bombing planes. However, officials say it offers greater flexibility because it can hold up to 63 firefighters in addition. The plane dropped several loads of retardant on a fire that has threatened houses at Port Stephens, 150km (90 miles) north of Sydney. Late on Friday local time, the blaze was not considered an immediate threat to lives. It had burnt through about 1,500 hectares The 737 was converted into an air tanker by Canadian company Coulson Aviation, and is on contract to the NSW Rural Fire Service. The fire-fighting agency has nine other water-bombing aircraft, including one with a 45,000-litre capacity. However, spokes

D&G: China shopping sites pull products in ad backlash

Image
Dolce & Gabbana products have been pulled from Chinese e-commerce sites as the backlash against a controversial ad campaign grows. The firm posted videos this week showing a Chinese model struggling to eat pasta and pizza with chopsticks. The campaign was accused of trivialising Chinese culture and promoting unflattering stereotypes. The controversy risks alienating Dolce & Gabbana from one of the world's biggest luxury markets. Local celebrities have called for a boycott of the brand. The brand crisis deepened when messages allegedly written by co-founder Stefano Gabbana, which included offensive comments about Chinese people, went viral. The firm apologised for any offence but said it and Gabbana's Instagram accounts had been hacked. It offered a fresh apology on Friday. The South China Morning Post published a video showing Gabbana and co-founder Domenico Dolce appealing for their "misunderstanding of Chinese culture" to be forgiven. A

Image
Mr Gates used the beaker of faeces to highlight bacteria and sanitation-related disease Billionaire philanthropist and Microsoft founder Bill Gates had his hands full on-stage in Beijing on Tuesday, showing a jar of human faeces. The stunt was part of his speech at the Reinvented Toilet Expo event - a showcase for new toilet technologies. The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has spent more than $200m on researching the field across the last seven years. Twenty cutting-edge sanitation products were on display, intended to destroy harmful bacteria and prevent disease. "I have to say, a decade ago I never imagined that I'd know so much about poop," Mr Gates joked at the conference. "And I definitely never thought that Melinda would have to tell me to stop talking about toilets and faecal sludge at the dinner table." The entrepreneur was helping to launch the three-day event in China - where leader Xi Jinping has made a so-called "toilet r

The group, thought to be from Vietnam, were concealed among a load of sparkling water at the port of Newhaven in Sussex on Thursday. Details of the Border Force operation have only just emerged, but a criminal investigation is under way. A Romanian man, believed to be the driver, has been charged with assisting unlawful entry into the UK. Chinese staff forced to drink urine and eat roaches

Image
Managers at a Chinese firm have been jailed for making staff who failed to reach sales targets drink urine and eat cockroaches, local media report. Police took action after videos emerged showing workers being whipped with a belt and drinking a yellow liquid. Social media posts alleged staff were also told to eat cockroaches if they did not meet targets. Three managers were jailed for five and 10 days over the incident, the South China Morning Post reports. A widely shared video posted on Chinese social media site Weibo shows a male employer standing in the middle of a circle, getting whipped with a belt. Other staff, said to be employees of the home renovation company in the city of Guizhou, can be seen drinking yellow liquid from plastic cups while holding their noses. Screenshots of what were said to be messages from the managers threaten staff that they will have to eat cockroaches for poor performances. According to media reports, other forms of shaming and pun

Cameroon kidnap: Bamenda students freed

Image
Students kidnapped from a boarding school in Cameroon's North-West region have been freed, officials say. The 79 students and three others were seized early on Sunday in the region's capital, Bamenda. The school's principal, the driver, and a teacher are still in captivity, the BBC's Mayeni Jones reports. The government and separatists in the English-speaking region have been accusing each other of being behind the kidnapping. A video purportedly showing some of the kidnapped students from Bamenda's Presbyterian Secondary School has been shared online, sparking outrage. An Anglophone separatist movement has been operating in the North-West and South-West regions over the past year. The circumstances of the students' release is unclear but authorities say they are being questioned before being released to their parents. According to the Presbyterian Church of Cameroon, the students were abandoned in one of their buildings in the town of Bafut, abou

Liverpool's Mohamed Salah follows Cristiano Ronaldo with the worse statue ever

Image
It has become something of a rite of passage for professional footballers, to have a strange, questionable and / or slightly insulting statue erected in your honour. Some big names have been given with some even bigger eyesores in the past, and now Mohamed Salah can count himself as a member of the club. The Liverpool forward has been immortalised by Egyptian sculptor Mai Abdel Allah, who unveiled her work at the World Youth Forum in Sharm El Sheikh on Sunday. This Mo Salah statue is certainly something... 😂🙈 pic.twitter.com/DPE0k9iBlg — Mo Salah Facts (@MoSalahFacts) November 4, 2018 While the skill involved cannot be denied, fans were quick to point out that the sculpture bore an uncanny resemblance to several other well-known figures, including Art Garfunkel and actor Daniel Stern, who played Marv the burglar in "Home Alone." Once you've seen it you can't unsee it. Mo Salah's statue is a dead ringer for Marv. pic.twitter.com/CCNyU1rEzW — Ja
