Cesc Fabregas accepts he would rather be in Tottenham's position as Chelsea continue to give chase for a Champions League spot.
Chelsea
cut the Premier League gap to fourth-placed Spurs to two points as
Fabregas secured a 1-0 win at relegation-threatened Swansea.
But
Spurs have a game in hand -- against Watford on Monday night -- and will
be expected to win at Wembley and increase their advantage to five
points with three games to play.
"We won, so they [Spurs] will
probably feel that they need to do well and not drop points anymore,"
Fabregas said. "But the advantage is for them because it's not up to us.
"Even
if we win every game and they do well, we will not be in the Champions
League next year, so that's why I would prefer to be in their position.
"We just have to keep on winning, but they obviously have the advantage because they are on top."
Chelsea's third successive away win has also given them hope of
overtaking Liverpool, who were surprisingly held at home by lowly Stoke
on Saturday.
Third-placed Liverpool are six points better off than
Chelsea but have played a game more, and travel to Stamford Bridge next
weekend.
"We have been winning games, not comfortably, and that
is the most important thing," Fabregas said. "Sometimes when you are in a
dip of form and you are struggling to get points, to win whatever it
takes, to do it is always positive.
"I think we've been doing well
that way, because every team we play is fighting for something. You
could see that with Swansea and it will be the same when Huddersfield
come to Stamford Bridge. We have had to dig in in certain moments and we
are ready to do that."
Fabregas' Liberty Stadium winner was his
50th goal in the Premier League - 35 of them coming at his former club
Arsenal, but the Spain midfielder had not scored in the league since
Chelsea's 2-0 home win against Everton in August.
"I was waiting
for it [50th goal] to happen and it took longer than I expected," he
said. "Playing in this [deeper] position it's a little bit more
difficult for me to get forward and to get into positions to score.
"But
in this game we had three midfielders and I have a little bit more
freedom to go forward to play a bit more in the position I've played
throughout my career."
Antonio Conte refused to criticise Alvaro Morata for missing several key chances to score in Chelsea's 2-2 draw with Arsenal, insisting that the striker has simply not been "lucky" in front of goal in recent games. Morata found himself behind the Arsenal defence with only Petr Cech to beat three times at the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday evening, twice missing the target and hitting the third attempt straight at the goalkeeper as Chelsea threatened to score a dramatic winning goal in the final seconds. Conte was visibly frustrated at his team's wastefulness on the touchline, but insisted after the match that Morata will soon rediscover his confidence in front of goal as long as he continues to get himself into scoring positions. "He's not lucky in this period, but he has to continue to work and to improve," Conte told Sky Sports. "For the striker it's very important to score. In this case it's a pity because he had many chanc...
Four soldiers have been arrested in Somalia after a nine-year-old schoolgirl was shot dead in the capital, Mogadishu, police say. Deqa Dahir died and another girl was wounded when bullets hit their school bus while it was stuck in a traffic jam, Amnesty International said. Soldiers opened fire in an apparent attempt to clear the road for their vehicle, the rights group added. Somalia's president met Dahir's family as public anger over the shooting grew. 'Crying and shouting' The nine-year-old was buried on Thursday, two days after she was killed. She was a first-year school pupil, and was returning home happily, eating ice cream, when she was killed by what appeared to be a stray bullet, reports the BBC's Ahmed Adan from Mogadishu. She was shot in the head and died instantly. Her father has demanded justice from the government of President Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed. "It was shocking to see the dead body of my daughter. I am helpless and n...
A nanny convicted of murdering two children she stabbed at their luxury New York City apartment has been sentenced to life in prison. In sentencing Yoselyn Ortega, 56, the judge described her as "pure evil" before handing her the maximum term. The bloody bodies of Lucia "Lulu" Krim, six, and her brother Leo, two, were found by their mother in a bathtub at the Manhattan flat on 25 October 2012. Ortega had pleaded insanity but the jury rejected her defence. On Monday, Ortega appeared visibly shaken as she apologised while addressing the court. Speaking in Spanish through a translator, she said she was "sorry for everything", adding that she hoped for "a great deal of forgiveness". 'Like a horror movie' During the two-month trial at the Supreme Court in Manhattan, the mother of the victims Marina Krim told the court how she had come home with her third child, three-year-old Nessie, after Ortega did not turn up at Lulu...
