Anthony Martial’s next goal is going to cost Manchester United €10 million

It’s no secret that Manchester United isn’t afraid to spend money by the bucketful. They spent a record-high amount on the transfer of Paul Pogba and they have the most expensive roster in all of Europe.
Pretty soon, it appears, they are going to have to dish out an extra €10 million because Anthony Martial is playing too well lately. Since Martial arrived at Old Trafford last season, he’s been in the best stretch of goal-scoring of his career and, because of it, his transfer from AS Monaco is going to cost Jose Mourinho’s side just a little bit more.
Per Martial’s contract, if he scores on Thursday in the Europa League against his former rival Saint-Étienne, it will trigger a clause in his contract that forces Manchester United to pay up a €10 million bonus to his old club when he hits 25 goals for the Red Devils. On Saturday, Martial scored goal No. 24 vs. Watford.
Martial is going to have to put in work to reach goal No. 25 and he’s clearly pretty motivated to make it happen. The chance to face Saint-Étienne, a rival from his days in the Lyon youth ranks, has the 21-year-old chomping at the bit for Thursday’s showdown.
“There was a huge rivalry while I was still at Lyon,” Martial told United’s official website. “It was always a highly charged atmosphere and they were usually massive games, the kind all players love to play in. So there will be that added competitive edge whenever I play against them.
“We know it will be a difficult match but if we play with all our quality, I think we can do good things. Of course, it would be great if I could score against them again, but I hope we can win the game because that’s the most important thing, then it would be a bonus if I managed to grab a goal.”
It would be a bonus for Martial, and a nice little bonus for Monaco, too. But hey, when you’re Manchester United and you’ve already spent hundreds of millions of Euros on building a squad, what’s another €10 million, right?
