Syria: 'Car bomb kills 41' near al-Bab after IS defeat

Image
A car bomb has killed at least 41 people in a rebel-held village near the Syrian town of al-Bab, sources in the region and monitors say. The explosion destroyed a rebel security post in Sousian, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said. The village is 8km (5 miles) north-west of al-Bab, from which Turkish-backed rebels pushed so-called Islamic State fighters on Thursday. Turkey says the rebels have "near complete control" of the city. The attack killed 35 civilians and six rebel fighters, Reuters reported, citing sources in the region. It said the target was a rebel checkpoint. Civilians were gathering to seek permission to return to al-Bab when the bomb exploded, the opposition-run Qasioun news agency said. Situated just north-east of Aleppo, al-Bab has about 100,000 inhabitants in the centre and about 50,000 more living in the suburbs. It fell to Syrian rebels in spring 2012 and was in IS hands by early 2014, when it became home to many foreign ji

South Sudan warns of hundreds of thousands facing famine

Image
A famine has been declared in parts of South Sudan, the first to be announced in any part of the world in six years. The government and the United Nations report that 100,000 people are facing starvation, with a million more on the brink of famine. A combination of civil war and an economic collapse have been blamed. There have been warnings of famine in Yemen, Somalia and north-eastern Nigeria, but South Sudan is the first to declare one. Last week, the UN World Food Programme (WFP) warned that more than 20 million people may face starvation in a series of famines over the next six months. The WFP's chief economist, Arif Husain, said a combination of wars and drought meant that for the first time in recent years, aid workers were now talking about four simultaneous famines in separate parts of the world. He added that despite record levels of international humanitarian aid distribution, there was not enough to look after all the people in need.

Indiana girls Liberty German and Abigail William found dead

Image
Two 13-year-old US girls who went missing on Monday have been found dead, and the case is being investigated as a double homicide, police say. The bodies, recovered on Tuesday near a creek in the US state of Indiana, were of Liberty German and Abigail Williams, post-mortem examinations confirmed. The girls were reported missing when they failed to show up to a meeting point after a hike. Police have yet to release a cause of death, citing an ongoing investigation. The girls' bodies were discovered along the edge of Deer Creek, about a mile east of Delphi, Indiana. They were found not far from an abandoned rail bridge where they had been dropped off to go hiking on Monday. The pair were reported missing hours later, when they did not show at a predetermined meeting point. Carroll County Sheriff Tobe Leazenby urged anyone with information to come forward. "It is disturbing. We're going to get to the bottom of this. We're confident of that,"

Anthony Martial’s next goal is going to cost Manchester United €10 million

Image
It’s no secret that Manchester United isn’t afraid to spend money by the bucketful. They spent a record-high amount on the transfer of Paul Pogba and they have the most expensive roster in all of Europe. Pretty soon, it appears, they are going to have to dish out an extra €10 million because Anthony Martial is playing too well lately. Since Martial arrived at Old Trafford last season, he’s been in the best stretch of goal-scoring of his career and, because of it, his transfer from AS Monaco is going to cost Jose Mourinho’s side just a little  bit more. Per Martial’s contract, if he scores on Thursday in the Europa League against his former rival Saint-Étienne, it will trigger a clause in his contract that forces Manchester United to pay up a €10 million bonus to his old club when he hits 25 goals for the Red Devils. On Saturday, Martial scored goal No. 24 vs. Watford. Martial is going to have to put in work to reach goal No. 25 and he’s clearly pretty mot

Toshiba chairman quits as losses loom

Image
Toshiba chairman Shigenori Shiga has resigned, hours after the company was forced to delay revealing details of a multi-billion dollar loss. The Japanese conglomerate was expected to say it was writing off about $6bn (£4.8bn) at its US nuclear business. But the BBC understands Toshiba has not been able to agree with its auditors how big the writedown should be. The company said Mr Shiga was stepping down "to take management responsibility for the loss". He will remain on the board until June to help deal with the fallout of the problems, Toshiba said. The financial chaos has led some analysts to warn the company's future is at risk. Toshiba has asked regulators for an extra month before issuing its earnings report - which will include the size of the loss and details of measures it plans to take to tackle its finances. Shares fell by as much as 9% on Tuesday and have lost about 50% since late December, when it first warned about the extent of the proble

Rolls-Royce reports record loss of £4.6bn

Image
A bribery settlement and the fall in the pound have pushed engineering giant Rolls-Royce to a record loss. The jet engine maker reported a loss before tax of £4.6bn for 2016. However, once one-off costs have been stripped out, the company's underlying profit was better than many experts had predicted. Rolls-Royce agreed to pay £671m to settle corruption cases with UK and US authorities and it has written off £4.4bn from currency related contracts. Underlying profits fell to £813m, down from £1.4bn the previous year, although the fall was much less than many analysts had forecast. Rolls-Royce Holdings Rolls-Royce, which has been a completely separate company to the car-maker since 1971, said the outlook for this year was for a "modest performance improvement", while chief executive Warren East said more needed to be done to improve profit margins. Mr East took over as chief executive in 2015 with the task of turning round the struggling company. It i

France avalanche: Four killed at Tignes ski resort

Image
At least four people have died in an avalanche at the ski resort of Tignes in south-eastern France, rescuers say. The group was buried after the wall of snow swept through an off-piste area, police say. Some reports say there were nine in the group, including a guide, and that the other five remain missing, trapped in the snow. However, local police have told the BBC that the other five may have failed to show up for the session. The 400-metre (1,300ft) wide avalanche occurred at an altitude of 2,100 metres, and struck at a particularly busy time during half-term holidays. The resort is popular with British holidaymakers, but local police said the four dead skiers were all French nationals. The avalanche appeared to have been set off by a group of skiers higher up, the ski station said in a statement. Rescue services deployed two helicopters as well as sniffer dogs to help search for the missing skiers. There are about 40 people involved in the rescue operation. The in

No love as Pakistan capital bans Valentine's Day

Image
A court in Pakistan has banned public celebrations of Valentine's Day in the capital, Islamabad, on the grounds that it is not part of Muslim culture. The Islamabad High Court's order prohibits all Valentine's Day festivities in government offices and public spaces with immediate effect. It also directs the media not to promote or cover Valentine's events. The orders were a response to a private petition which argued that Valentine's Day was contrary to Islamic teaching. According to the Dawn newspaper, the petition argued that the festival promoted immorality, nudity and indecency under the cover of spreading love. Valentine's Day has grown in popularity in many cities in Pakistan over the past decade, but some religious groups have denounced it as decadent. The ban does not affect shops and restaurants, but it is the first time such a ruling has been imposed in the capital. Countries out of love with Valentine's Day It comes a year afte
