Oscars 2019: Full List Of Winners

It was a night of upset in Hollywood, as Green Book took home Best Picture--and dashed Netflixs $30 million bet on scoring a win in the hotly-contested category with Roma. The Universal buddy drama, starring Mahershala Ali and Viggo Mortensen, overcame stiff competition from superhero movie Black Panther, racially-charged comedy BlacKkKlansman, Queen history Bohemian Rhapsody, off-kilter period drama The Favourite, black-and-white autobiography Roma, musical tragedy A Star Is Born and Dick Cheney biopic Vice. The film tells the tale of a black concert pianist Don Shirley and his Italian-American driver Tony Vallelonga traveling through the racist deep South. It overcame criticism for its portrayal of Mortenses character, Tony Vallelonga, as a white savior. The backlash was furthered by the Shirley family, who claimed it misrepresented the prodigys relationship with them. Green Book was not the only controversial film to emerge triumphant. Bohemian Rhapsody led the awards scoreb...

Too heavy to move; man dies aged 29 after predicting his death

Image
Plus size, whether acquired or not no one would love to get a weight that would be hard to manage. The star of the TLC reality show “My 600lb Life” has passed away aged 29. Sean Milliken died in hospital on Sunday after suffering complications from an infection, his dad confirmed. His father Matt wrote on Facebook: “Sunday he was having problems with his breathing, they were able to resuscitate him and a short time later his heart stopped. “ He added his son was a “good man” with a “good heart”. At one point Sean weighed 900lbs – 64 stone – and was so heavy he could only stand up for 30 seconds. He struggled with his weight since childhood after his parents divorced and hit 400lbs after becoming bedridden due to an injury in high school. Sean appeared on My 600lb Life in 2016 and said at the time he wanted to move to Houston to have weight loss surgery and that he was scared he wouldn’t make it past his 30th birthday. It is unclear if he did have the surgery. Sean said ...

Death toll in last week's Nigeria attack doubles to 130

Image
Security forces find dozens of bodies following gunmens attack in Kaduna state, doubling the initial death toll. The death toll from an attack last week by gunmen in northwestern Nigeria has doubled to more than 130, the Kaduna state governor has said. The attack appeared to have been a deliberate plan to wipe out certain communities, Governor Nasir Ahmad el-Rufai said on Tuesday, without elaborating. Al Jazeeras Mohammed Adow, reporting from Abuja, said the increase in death toll was expected from the beginning as 130 people had been marked as missing in the aftermath of the attack. The security forces have been combing the area, looking for survivors as well as bodies. They said they found most of the bodies burnt beyond recognition in a ravine, he said. We met survivors who told us that hundreds of men armed with guns and other crude weapons had descended on the villages, killing and beheading anyone they saw. Some of them had their entire families killed in the attacks....

James Gargasoulas jailed for six murders

Image
An Australian man has been sentenced to life in jail for murdering six people and injuring 27 more in a vehicle attack in Melbourne. James Gargasoulas, 29, deliberately ploughed a stolen car into pedestrians in the city centre in January 2017. He later told a court in a confusing speech that he had carried out the attack after receiving a premonition. On Friday, a judge described it as one of the worst mass murders in Australian history. "You made no attempt to avoid people or to slow down. You simply ploughed through them, quite deliberately," Justice Mark Weinberg said, according to a report by Seven News. The attack killed three-month-old Zachary Bryant, Thalia Hakin, 10, Jess Mudie, 22, Yosuke Kanno, 25, Bhavita Patel, 33, and Matthew Si, 33. Gargasoulas will be eligible for parole after 46 years. He had pleaded not guilty to the attack on busy Bourke St, but later admitted to carrying it out. During his trial last year, a jury was shown graphic footage of G...

R Kelly faces fresh claims of sexual abuse

Image
Two more women have come forward with allegations of sexual misconduct against the R&B singer R Kelly. Rochelle Washington and Latresa Scaff told a news conference they were given drink and drugs at an after-concert party in Baltimore in the 1990s. They said the singer then cornered them in a hotel room and demanded sex. Kelly, 52, has been accused of decades of sexual abuse against women. He has never been convicted and denies all the allegations. Addressing journalists in New York, the two women said they were teenagers when Kelly's security staff picked them out of a concert audience. They were unable to give the exact year but said it was either 1995 or 1996. Ms Scaff, 40, said that at the party they were given cocaine, marijuana and alcohol and invited to wait for the singer in his hotel room. Once there, they were told that he was about to arrive and that they should pull up their dresses, she said. The singer arrived with his penis exposed, Ms Scaff said, ...

Chelsea banned from signing new players for next two transfer windows

Image
Chelsea have been banned from signing players in the next two transfer windows for breaching rules in relation to youth players, Fifa has announced. The ban, until the end of January 2020, does not prevent the release of players and will not apply to their women's and futsal teams. The Premier League club have been given three days to appeal. They have also been fined £460,000, while the Football Association (FA) has been fined £390,000. It comes following a Fifa investigation into Chelsea's signing of foreign under-18 players, including former striker Bertrand Traore. The world governing body says it found breaches in 29 cases. The FA has been told it must "address the situation" regarding the international transfer and registration of minors. A spokesperson for English football's governing body said it had "co-operated fully" with the investigations and had "raised some concerns" regarding Fifa's disciplinary processes. A ...

Emiliano Sala: Cardiff footballer's funeral takes place

Image
Mourners have been paying their final respects to Cardiff City striker Emiliano Sala in his native Argentina. The 28-year-old died when the plane he was in with pilot David Ibbotson crashed in the English Channel en route from Nantes to Cardiff on 21 January. A wake was held at the club Sala played for as a youth in his hometown of Progreso before the funeral started later on Saturday. Among those who attended was Cardiff City manager Neil Warnock. "I would like to find a responsible person...someone who says to me: 'this happened'; but, well, it seems this was just an accident," said Sala's aunt Mirta Taffarel.  Sala was killed when a single-engine light aircraft, flown by pilot Mr Ibbotson, crashed near Alderney just two days after he became Cardiff City's record transfer. His body, which was recovered from the wreckage following a privately-funded search last week, was repatriated to Argentina on Friday. It was then driven from Buenos Aires to the ...

Martial needs to follow Ronaldo example at Man United - Solskjaer

Image
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has challenged Anthony Martial to follow Cristiano Ronaldo's example and use Manchester United to become one of the best players in the world. Martial signed a new five-year contract on Thursday that will keep him at the club until 2024. Solskjaer admitted the 23-year-old has had "ups and down" since arriving at Old Trafford in 2015 but now wants him to follow in Ronaldo's footsteps having watched the Portugal international develop into one of the world's best while they were teammates under Sir Alex Ferguson. "You talk about Cristiano's career, what he's made, how he's got there," Solskjaer said. "Cristiano was the best, the way he's changed to now. "That's part of any player -- you've got to model yourself on someone and you've got to have more challenges ahead of you. Anthony sat down and wants to be a part of that and the club have got a top player there." Martial looked ...

US imposes visa sanctions on Ghana for refusing to take back deportees

Image
The United States has imposed visa restrictions on Ghana following the government's refusal to accept Ghanaian nationals deported from the US back into the country. "Ghana has failed to live up to its obligations under international law to accept the return of its nationals ordered removed from the United States," Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen said in the statement on Thursday. "The United States routinely cooperates with foreign governments in documenting and accepting US citizens when asked, as appropriate, as do the majority of countries in the world, but Ghana has failed to do so in this case." Nielsen said the Secretary of State Mike Pompeo had instructed consular officers in Ghana to stop issuing some categories of visas to applicants. The DHS statement did not specify the categories of applicants affected by the sanctions. Without an appropriate response from the Ghanaian government, the visa restrict...

Governor jailed for sexual assault

Image
A former South Korean governor and one-time presidential contender has been sentenced to three and a half years in prison for rape, five months after he was controversially acquitted for the same crime. Ahn Hee-jung was jailed by an appeals court Friday for the rape and assault of Kim Ji-eun, his former assistant, Kim's lawyer Jung Hye-sun told CNN. Speaking after the verdict, Kim thanked her lawyers and witnesses who supported her case. "I can say goodbye to my torturous time when I was forced to live feeling like a witch to be burnt," she said. "I'd like to share all the help I received with other victims who still have to prove everything in their lonely fights. I'd like to send my solidarity to all the victims of sexual crimes whether they spoke about their cases but were ignored or couldn't speak about their issues and quietly watched my trial." Kim came forward with the allegations during an interview with South Korean ...

France puts up food and drink prices under new law

Image
Nutella, Président Camembert, Ricard Pastis and Carte Noire coffee are among the brands set to cost more in France as a law on food prices takes effect. It means big food and drink brands can no longer be sold at cost price. Shops' profit margin must be at least 10%. But many shops' own-brand products are expected to get a bit cheaper. Such goods often come from smaller firms. The government aims to help smaller producers but France has continuing yellow-vest protests over prices. How much of a price rise? The 10% margin threshold means a food or drink brand previously sold for €1 (£0.88; $1.1) now has to be priced at €1.1 minimum. But there will not be uniform price increases, French media report. The law affects supermarkets and hypermarkets more than small local shops. That is because the big outlets offer some popular brands at or near cost price, slashing their margins on those products, in order to lure customers, in a fierce price war. Their profits dep...

Australia weather: January was hottest month on record

Image
Australia recorded its hottest month ever in January, with average temperatures exceeding 30C (86F) for the first time. According to the Bureau of Meteorology, the extreme heat was "unprecedented" during the country's summer period. At least five January days were among the 10 warmest on record, with daily national temperature highs of 40C. The heat has caused wildfire deaths, bushfires and a rise in hospital admissions. Several wildlife species have also suffered, with reports of mass deaths of wild horses, native bats and fish in drought-affected areas. The new record surpasses conditions recorded in 2013, previously considered the nation's worst heatwave. Just how bad did it get? A large swathe of the state of New South Wales bore the brunt of the fortnight of extreme heat, with temperatures also soaring in parts of Queensland, South Australia, Victoria and the Northern Territory. In Tasmania, fire crews battled more than 50 bushfires fuelled by d...

Cold snap continues.... death toll rises to 21 as US

Image
At least 21 people have died in one of the worst cold snaps to hit the US Midwest in decades. Ninety million people - a third of the US - have seen temperatures of -17C (0F) or below. Some 250 million Americans overall have experienced the "polar vortex" conditions. Hospitals have been treating patients reporting frostbite as parts of the country ground to a halt. Temperatures are expected to swing to above average over the weekend. Who are the victims? Homeless people have been particularly at risk, with warming shelters set up across cities. But some still braved the freezing conditions and one woman, aged 60, was found dead in an abandoned house in Lorain, Ohio.  may end up losing a limb, CNN reports. Half of those patients were homeless individuals , while others had jobs that required them to be outdoors. Some people were found dead a short walk from their homes: A Michigan man who froze to death in his neighbourhood had been "inadequately dressed ...

Sarri pleads for patience, time amid talk of Chelsea crisis

Image
Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri has said he needs patience and time to "change the mentality" at the club before he can make his style a success. Criticism of Sarri's methods intensified after Wednesday's 4-0 thrashing at Bournemouth, with some travelling fans confronting him outside the stadium after the game. The result -- a fourth Premier League defeat in 10 matches -- saw Chelsea slip to fifth in the table behind Arsenal, but Sarri said he would not be deviated from the plan he is trying to implement. "I think that my football is about co-operation, so I have to speak to my players and involve them in my football, more than we are doing in the moment," he told a news conference ahead of the home game against bottom-of-the-table Huddersfield. "Now we have the mentality for doing the match, but we need to improve in the reaction. We need to improve in the offensive phase. "We have a lot of individual players, so it's not easy...
