Chinese staff forced to drink urine and eat roaches

Image
Managers at a Chinese firm have been jailed for making staff who failed to reach sales targets drink urine and eat cockroaches, local media report. Police took action after videos emerged showing workers being whipped with a belt and drinking a yellow liquid. Social media posts alleged staff were also told to eat cockroaches if they did not meet targets. Three managers were jailed for five and 10 days over the incident, the South China Morning Post reports. A widely shared video posted on Chinese social media site Weibo shows a male employer standing in the middle of a circle, getting whipped with a belt. Other staff, said to be employees of the home renovation company in the city of Guizhou, can be seen drinking yellow liquid from plastic cups while holding their noses. Screenshots of what were said to be messages from the managers threaten staff that they will have to eat cockroaches for poor performances. According to media reports, other forms of shaming and pun...

WeChat's owner Tencent sees profits soar by more than 60%

Image
Chinese tech giant Tencent Holdings has posted a record quarterly profit for the three months to March, sending its shares up more than 5% on Thursday. The firm, which owns the popular messaging app WeChat, posted a 61% year-on-year jump in profit, to 23.29bn yuan ($3.7bn; £2.73bn). Tencent's online games, like the hugely popular Honour of Kings, boosted revenues by 26%. WeChat, which is a bit like WhatsApp, is now China's biggest social network. WeChat is integral to that revenue as Tencent uses the platform as a way of getting those games out to users. Together with its Chinese-only version Weixin, WeChat hit one billion monthl...

Who Was That Kid at the Avengers: Endgame Funeral?

Image
Major spoilers for Avengers: Endgame below. You’ll be horrifically shocked to learn that at least one person dies in Avengers: Endgame. We won’t go down the full roster of casualties right now, but we can address the most climactic of them: the final sacrifice of Tony Stark. Iron Man perishes while defeating the galaxy’s hottest space daddy, Thanos, and is subsequently laid to rest by his friends and family. (Yes, family. He managed to settle down and have a kid over the course of the yarn.) There are oodles of familiar faces at Stark’s funeral, set on the property of his post-snap cabin in the woods. But there’s one upon whom the camera lingers, despite the fact that many viewers will likely have no clue who it belongs to. He’s a lanky teenage boy with a vaguely emo demeanor, and if his visage is ringing any bells, then you’ve clearly seen Iron Man 3. The kid is none other than Harley Keener, as portrayed by the fantastically named actor Ty Simpkins. We were first introduced to...
