Pablo Escobar museum in Colombia shut down

Image
Colombian police have shut down a small museum dedicated to the life of drug lord Pablo Escobar in MedellĆn. Officers staged a raid to shut down the site, owned by Escobar's brother, because it did not have a tourism licence with which to operate. At the height of his career, Escobar's cartel supplied an estimated 80% of the cocaine smuggled into the United States. He was killed in a shoot-out with police in MedellĆn in 1993.  Foreign tourists were visiting when the police staged the raid on Wednesday. Some of the items displayed in the museum - which is part of so-called narco tours in the city - include some of Escobar's cars and motorbikes. "There is a temporary suspension of the activity of this business in MedellĆn, dedicated to promoting the life of one of the saddest bandits, of those who have done the most damage to this city," AndrĆ©s TobĆ³n, MedellĆn's security chief, told local newspaper El Colombiano. "As if that were not enough,

Facebook stops sending staff to help political campaigns

Image
Facebook will no longer send employees to work at the offices of political campaigns during elections, the company has announced. The social network used to offer dedicated staff to political campaigns to help them develop their online advertising campaigns. Donald Trump's digital director for the 2016 presidential election has said Facebook's assistance helped him win. Facebook said rival Hillary Clinton was offered the same support, but declined. The social network is the second largest online advertising broker, behind Google.  Google and Twitter also offer specialised advice to political campaigns. They have not indicated that they will end the practice. Facebook said it would instead offer free advertising advice to all political parties through its website. However, campaigns will still be able to get support online and the company did not rule out holding meetings with politicians. According to internal documents seen by  Bloomberg , Donald Trump's c

Lake Victoria Tanzania ferry disaster death toll hits 100

Image
At least 100 people have died after a ferry carrying hundreds of people capsized on Lake Victoria, Tanzania, officials say. Many are missing and it is feared that more than 200 people in total may have drowned. Rescue efforts resumed on Friday after being halted overnight. The MV Nyerere ferry overturned near Ukara island on its way from Bugorora. It is thought the overloaded vessel tipped over when crowds on board moved to one side as it docked.  The BBC's Aboubakar Famau in Tanzania says fear has gripped residents of the Mwanza region as they wait to hear the fate of relatives who travelled on the MV Nyerere on Thursday. "I received a call telling me that I have lost my aunt, father and my younger brother," says Editha Josephat Magesa, a local resident. "We are really saddened and urge the government to provide a new ferry because the old one was small and the population is big." Our reporter says the ferry's engines were recently replaced a

Russia reinstated by Wada after doping scandal suspension

Image
A decision to lift the suspension of Russia's anti-doping agency has been labelled "the greatest treachery against clean athletes". The World Anti-Doping Agency (Wada) has ended a three-year suspension which followed a major scandal over alleged state-sponsored doping. Leading athletes and anti-doping bodies had opposed the move. Wada president Sir Craig Reedie said the reinstatement was "subject to strict conditions". "This decision provides a clear timeline by which Wada must be given access to the former Moscow laboratory data and samples," the 77-year-old Briton said. He said the "great majority" of the 12-strong executive committee had voted in favour of the recommendation at a meeting in the Seychelles. However, a lawyer for Russian whistleblower Grigory Rodchenkov called it "the greatest treachery against clean athletes in Olympic history". "The United States is wasting its money by continuing to fu

Trump urged Spain to 'build a wall' across Sahara, says minister

Image
President Trump recommended building a wall across the Sahara to solve Europe's migrant crisis, Spain's foreign minister says. Josep Borrell, also a former President of the European Parliament, disagreed with the strategy. The comments came during a visit Mr Borrell made to the US at the end of June. Mr Trump's pledge to build a wall between the US and Mexico was one of his best-known election promises. Mr Borrell recounted his conversation with the US president at a lunch event in Madrid this week, Spain's foreign ministry confirmed to the BBC. "The border with the Sahara cannot be bigger than our border with Mexico," Mr Borrell quoted Mr Trump as saying. The US-Mexico border is 1,954 miles (3,145 km) long. The Sahara desert stretches for 3,000 miles. Spain has no sovereignty over the Sahara, but it does possess two small enclaves on the north African coast, Ceuta and Melilla, separated from Morocco by controversial wire fences. The enclaves

Deqa Dahir shot dead in Mogadishu: Somali troops detained

Image
Four soldiers have been arrested in Somalia after a nine-year-old schoolgirl was shot dead in the capital, Mogadishu, police say. Deqa Dahir died and another girl was wounded when bullets hit their school bus while it was stuck in a traffic jam, Amnesty International said. Soldiers opened fire in an apparent attempt to clear the road for their vehicle, the rights group added. Somalia's president met Dahir's family as public anger over the shooting grew. 'Crying and shouting' The nine-year-old was buried on Thursday, two days after she was killed. She was a first-year school pupil, and was returning home happily, eating ice cream, when she was killed by what appeared to be a stray bullet, reports the BBC's Ahmed Adan from Mogadishu. She was shot in the head and died instantly. Her father has demanded justice from the government of President Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed. "It was shocking to see the dead body of my daughter. I am helpless and n

Dutch rail crash: Four children killed in electric cart

Image
Four children from a Dutch day-care centre, two of them sisters, have died in a collision involving a train and an electric cart driven by a supervisor. The children were being taken to local schools in the cart when the accident happened on a level crossing in the southern town of Oss, west of Nijmegen. A fifth child and a woman were critically injured in the crash. The woman on the back of the cart had just dropped off a child at one school before setting off for another. Three of the five children were sisters and two of them died, officials said. Those involved the accident near Oss-West station were all of primary-school age, which in the Netherlands can start at four. Mayor Wobine Buijs-Glaudemans told a news conference that everyone was affected by the tragedy, and her thoughts went out to those families caught up in the accident. "There are no words to describe what they're going through," she said. What led to crash? The level crossing has

Jet Airways: Passengers hurt as pilots 'forget' cabin pressure

Image
More than 30 Indian passengers, some bleeding from their noses and ears, have received treatment after pilots "forgot" to turn on a switch regulating cabin pressure, officials said. Jet Airways flight 9W 697 from Mumbai to Jaipur turned back shortly after take off. Videos tweeted by passengers aboard the plane showed oxygen masks deployed inside the aircraft. The Boeing 737, which was carrying 166 passengers, landed safely. The aviation ministry said the cockpit crew had been taken off duty pending an investigation. Lalit Gupta, a senior official of India's aviation regulator, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), told the Hindustan Times newspaper that the crew had forgotten to select a switch to maintain cabin pressure. Jet Airways said in a statement that Thursday morning's flight had turned back "due to loss in cabin pressure" and "regretted" the inconvenience caused to its passengers. "The B737 aircraft, wi

GK - Wojciech Szczesny (Juventus) Juve performed heroically for an hour with 10 men to win 2-0 at Valencia after Cristiano Ronaldo's red card. They may have had to suffer a few flutters near the end had Szczesny, who is making their No. 1 spot his own after Gianluigi Buffon's departure, not saved Daniel Parejo's late penalty -- ensuring a continuation of their superb away form was guaranteed. RB - Trent Alexander-Arnold (Liverpool) It said plenty that L'Equipe, the French newspaper whose player rating system is notoriously harsh, gave Alexander-Arnold eight out of 10 in their postmatch analysis. Nobody else on the Anfield pitch reached that level though you would think Alexander-Arnold will have more taxing assignments then facing a sluggish Neymar, who left all kinds of space for the 19-year-old to maraud into, but he took full advantage and the evidence is that Liverpool have a star on their hands. Cristiano Ronaldo sending off shows he must change his game to succeed at Juventus

Image
The debate over the justification for Cristiano Ronaldo's Champions League red card in Juventus' 2-0 win against Valencia will probably outlast whatever suspension he receives from UEFA, but what cannot be argued against is that the 33-year-old only has himself to blame for the mess he now finds himself in. On first inspection, and then with the benefit of replays from all angles, Ronaldo's dismissal following his clash with Valencia's Jeison Murillo appeared soft. But it was Ronaldo's stupidity and petulance in attempting to grab Murillo by the hair which gave German referee Felix Brych the grounds to brandish the first Champions League red card of the player's career. It was a show of frustration by Ronaldo and he was punished for it. He will serve an automatic one-suspension when Juve host Young Boys in Turin next month, but the tears which followed his dismissal might be down to the prospect of him also missing an emotional return to Manches

PSG's collection of stars need to come together as a team to have any hope in Europe

Image
In the away dressing room at Anfield on Tuesday, Kylian Mbappe sat quietly, his head in his hands. A few minutes earlier, the French prodigy gave the ball away on the edge of his own box, which led to Roberto Firmino's goal, which led to another Paris Saint-Germain loss away from home in a big game: a 3-2 defeat to Liverpool. Mbappe is sat between Lassana Diarra and Christopher Nkunku. The room is silent. This is not the way PSG wanted to start a new Champions League campaign. Despite the defeat and despite the average performance by his team, however, Thomas Tuchel is not angry; he is actually quite content. The manager even highlights the fact that Paris came back from 2-0 down to draw level 2-2 and almost get a point. In the middle of the room, on the two tables of food left for the players is untouched for now. The PSG squad feels a bit like a beaten boxer, knocked out late in a very important fight. When the Parisians arrived at the stadium, two hours before

Cristiano Ronaldo's sister on Champions League red card: 'They want to destroy my brother'

Image
Cristiano Ronaldo's sister, Katia Aveiro, has come out in defence of the Juventus forward after his red card in the 2-0 win against Valencia on Wednesday. Ronaldo was dismissed on his Champions League debut for Juve after a clash with Jeison Murillo was spotted by the assistant referee and communicated to German referee Felix Brych, who drew a red card from his top pocket. The Portuguese forward was reluctant to leave the field at the Mestalla and appeared to be on the verge of tears as he finally walked to the tunnel in disbelief. She wrote on Instagram: "A football disgrace...justice will be done...they want to destroy my brother, but God never sleeps...disgraceful." Aveiro posted further images of the incident on her Instagram story with similar captions. It was Ronaldo's first red card in 154 Champions League games, and the decision means he could miss a return to Old Trafford when Juventus play Manchester United next month if he gets at l

Game of Thrones wins best drama at Emmys... and other things that went down

Foy won the best actress in a drama series for her role as Queen Elizabeth II in Netflix's royal epic The Crown. Game of Thrones won two prizes - best drama series and supporting actor for Peter Dinklage - while The Marvelous Mrs Maisel scooped five comedy awards. However, two hotly-tipped shows - Atlanta and The Handmaid's Tale - failed to replicate their successes from last year and went home empty-handed. Elisabeth Moss had been the pre-show favourite to win best drama actress for the second season of The Handmaid's Tale, but lost out to Foy. In her acceptance speech, the British star described her time on The Crown as "the most e

Korea nuclear talks: Moon goes North to push stalled negotiations

Image
The leaders of North and South Korea are meeting in the North Korean capital for talks centred on the stalled denuclearisation negotiations. Since the beginning of the year North Korea has embarked on an unprecedented path of meetings with both the South and the US. Yet talks with Washington have reached deadlock, with both sides so far agreeing only to very general goals. South Korea has taken on a key mediating role. South Korean President Moon Jae-in and his wife Kim Jung-sook arrived in Pyongyang on Tuesday morning for the three-day visit. They were warmly welcomed from the plane by Mr Kim and his wife, Ri Sol-ju. It's the first trip to the North Korean capital by a leader from the South in a decade. It is Mr Moon's third meeting with the North's Kim Jong-un since their historic summit at the border in April this year. The Korean War ended in 1953 with an armistice - but no formal peace treaty was signed.       The two leaders are expected to talk about &q

Russian military plane vanishes from radar off Syria

Image
A Russian military aircraft with 14 people on board has disappeared from radar after flying over Syria, Russia's defence ministry says. "Connection has been lost with the crew of a Russian Il-20 plane over the Mediterranean Sea," the ministry said. Contact was lost at about 23:00 local time (20:00 GMT) on Monday, it added. Russia began military strikes in Syria in 2015 after a request from President Bashar al-Assad, who has stayed in power despite seven years of civil war. The conflict has so far killed more than 350,000 people. The incident on Monday reportedly occurred about 35km (22 miles) from the Syrian coast as the Ilyushin Il-20 aircraft was returning to Russia's Hmeimim airbase near the north-western city of Latakia. "The trace of the Il-20 on flight control radars disappeared during an attack by four Israeli F-16 jets on Syrian facilities in Latakia province," Russia's Tass news agency reported. "At the same time Russia

Ghana bans 61 referees for corruption

Image
The Referees Association of Ghana (RAG) says it has exonerated 14 and suspended or banned 61 referees because there was no evidence beyond reasonable doubt to substantiate allegations of corruption and bribery against them. RAG became the latest body on Monday to issue long bans to Ghanaian referees caught up in a documentary by investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas, which alleged widespread corruption and bribery among referees in Ghana. CAF and FIFA have already banned the referees on the list of the Referees Association of Ghana. Three months after the allegations first emerged, RAG says it has found 61 referees guilty on charges of bribery and corruption. The body has handed out 10-year suspensions to 53 referees and banned another eight for life after studying footage from the investigation, and 14 referees who appeared in the video were deemed to have no case to answer. "In some cases, their names were just mentioned and at no point do we see them do an

CAF Champions League: Five dead after Angolan stadium stampede

Image
Five people died in a stampede at Estadio 11 de Novembro following the CAF Champions League quarter final first leg between Primeiro de Agosto and Tout Puissant Mazembe in Luanda on Saturday. The tragedy came less than a week after one person was killed and 40 were injured in a stampede outside the Mahamasina Stadium, Antananarivo ahead of Madagascar's Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Senegal. According to Reuters, Angola's sports ministry reported a further seven people being released from hospital after being injured in the crush, as fans left the stadium after the 0-0 draw. The sports ministry, who will be launching an investigation, believed that the game's delayed start time was partly to blame for the incident, with fans reportedly finding the stadium gates still closed as they attempted to leave the ground. It is reported that some fans were trampled under police horses as they poured out of the stadium after the gates were opened. African fo

Mohamed Salah on Liverpool's chances: I am sure we can win the Champions League

Image
Mohamed Salah has said that he believes Liverpool are capable of winning both the Premier League and Champions League this season. Liverpool have opened their league season with five wins for the first time since 1990-91 and begin their European campaign on Tuesday night when Paris Saint-Germain arrive at Anfield. Salah was part of the Liverpool side that were beaten by Real Madrid in last season's Champions League final and is confident Jurgen Klopp's team can adequately compete on multiple fronts this term. "Last season we knocked out Manchester City, then Roma, who had just beaten Barca in the quarterfinals. Each time, they were incredible games," the Egypt star told France Football. "We played against teams challenging for the title and we still managed to reach the final, so of course we can do it again. "I'm sure of it. We can even win both, the Champions League and the Premier League. I don't want us to put pressure on oursel
