Sharks attack two children in New York, officials say

Image
Two children have been injured in shark attacks off the coast of Long Island in New York in the first such incidents in the state for 70 years, officials say. A 12-year-old girl and a 13-year-old boy were treated for puncture wounds in separate incidents miles apart along the bay of Fire Island on Wednesday. A tooth, described as being "consistent with a large fish", was extracted from the boy's leg and is being analysed. Shark attacks on humans are extremely rare in the US state of New York. The young girl, who was later named as Lola Pollina, said she was standing waist-deep in the cold water and described seeing a fin before returning to the beach to discover "my leg was bloody". "I saw something, like, next to me, and I kind of felt pain, and looked and I saw a fin," she said, adding: "We went to the lifeguards, we ran up to them and they kind of bandaged it." She said the shadow in the water appeared to be about 4ft (1.

France World Cup win proves Kylian Mbappe is the sport's future king

Image
He is still only 19 years old, but Kylian Mbappe has already gone one better than Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. The France prodigy now has a World Cup winners' medal in his pocket, and Messi and Ronaldo have spent all of their careers chasing that elusive piece of gold.Their failure -- a harsh word considering their respective stellar careers -- to win a World Cup is something that continues to be used as a negative when the debate about who is the greatest of all time kicks into gear. It is still what sets Pele and Diego Maradona apart in the eyes of many. Mbappe has a long way to go before his name gets through into that bracket, but when he does -- it feels more like when than if -- there will be no asterisk alongside it that says "yet to win a World Cup." The Paris Saint-Germain forward is the heir apparent to Messi and Ronaldo, and the 2018 World Cup final felt like a changing of the guard. The new kid on the block is ready to take over. Not onl

France's Kylian Mbappe misses training but fit to start

Image
Kylian Mbappe did not train with France on Monday evening in St Petersburg on the eve of the World Cup semifinal against Belgium, but sources told ESPN he is still expected to play. The French forward had a small back problem and received some treatment at the stadium while his teammates practised. However, his absence was only a precaution and there is no doubt about his participation to the game on Tuesday, sources said. N'Golo Kante and Benjamin Pavard didn't take part in the collective training session either and simply jogged and stretched on the side of the pitch. Didier Deschamps is managing the fitness, tiredness and little niggles of some of his players. The France coach will only make one change to the team that will face Belgium on Tuesday, sources said. Blaise Matuidi, who was suspended against Uruguay on Friday, will come back in the starting line up with Corentin Tolisso sitting back on the bench. France will line up once again in a 4-4-2 formation

New Nigeria opposition alliance aims to defeat Buhari

Image
Nigeria's main opposition People's Democratic Party (PDP) has formed an alliance with dozens of other parties in a bid to defeat President Muhammadu Buhari in next year's election. The coalition, including a faction of the governing party, plans to field a single candidate. They say they want to "rescue the nation from further decline". Mr Buhari, whose first term has been blighted by ill health, says he will run in 2019. A similar coalition of opposition parties, which backed Mr Buhari, was largely responsible for the defeat of then-President  Goodluck Jonathan in the 2015 elections, says the BBC's Ishaq Khalid in the capital Abuja. Many serving senators, members of the lower house of parliament and some state governors are believed to be behind the new movement, our reporter adds. The 39-party alliance, called the Coalition of United Political Party, says it wants to form a government of national unity. One of the leaders of the breakaway

Cristiano Ronaldo will stay at Real Madrid despite Juventus speculation - Luka Modric

Image
Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric has said he does not think Cristiano Ronaldo will leave the Bernabeu despite speculation that he will join Italian champions Juventus. Portugal captain Ronaldo has spent nine years at Madrid, but speculation over a potential €100 million transfer caused Juve's share price to soar last week. After a report in Italy on Thursday claimed Ronaldo had accepted terms, a source close to the player told ESPN that nothing had yet been decided over his future but said talks could move forward. Modric, however, believes the 33-year-old will stay with the Champions League winners. "Let's see what happens," AS reported him as saying. "I don't think he's going to go and I would like him to stay because he's the best player in the world. "He means a lot and hopefully he will stay. I think he's going to stay -- that's my opinion. It would be very good if he stayed because I can't imagine him in any oth

Why Bananas may go into extinction

Image
A wild banana that may hold the key to protecting the world's edible banana crop has been put on the extinction list. It is found only in Madagascar, where there are just five mature trees left in the wild. Scientists say the plant needs to be conserved, as it may hold the secret to keeping bananas safe for the future. Most bananas consumed around the world are of a type known as the Cavendish, which is vulnerable to a plant pest. The race is on to develop new banana varieties that are both tasty to eat and resilient enough to survive attack from Panama disease. The Madagascan banana has evolved in isolation on an island cut off from the mainland, and may have special properties. Richard Allen, senior conservation assessor at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, said the species ( Ensete perrieri ) could have in-built tolerance to drought or disease. "It doesn't have Panama disease in it, so perhaps it has genetic traits against the disease," he said. "

Kidnapped Ecuadorean couple 'killed two months ago'

Image
Forensic tests on two bodies found in the Colombian jungle show that they are those of Oscar Villains and Katty Velasco, an Ecuadorean couple kidnapped on 17 April. The tests also suggest they were stabbed to death two months ago. They had been kidnapped by dissident members of the now dissolved Colombian rebel group Farc. The dissident gang is led by a man known as Guacho, who refused to follow the Farc's orders to lay down arms. He broke away from the Farc and founded the Oliver Sinisterra Front, which is thought to have about 70 to 80 combatants. His gang has been active in the Ecuador-Colombia border area for the past two years. Mr Villacís, 24, and Ms Velasco, 20, went missing from Puerto Rico, a rural area near the Colombian town of Tumaco, on the border with Ecuador. Four days after their disappearance, the gang released a video of the two with ropes around their necks and their hands tied. They asked Ecuadorean President Lenín Moreno to give the kidnappers

Russia fan in Germany celebrates World Cup win over Spain with AK-47

An AK-47 was confiscated in the German town of Essen as a German citizen with Russian heritage celebrated Russia's round-of-16 defeat of Spain at the 2018 World Cup, local police have confirmed to ESPN FC. The 39-year-old is now facing charges for violation of the Kriegswaffenkontrollgesetz , the War Weapons Control Act, an offence punishable with a prison term of up to five years under German law. After Russia advanced to the quarterfinals of their home World Cup with a penalty-shootout defeat of Spain, eye witnesses in Essen had reported a white Mercedes driving on one of the main streets of Germany's ninth-largest city. The witnesses reported an unknown man not only displaying a Russia flag but also a rifle. When police stopped the car minutes later, an officer "spotted the evidently real machine gun and under threat of their weapon asked the occupants to show their hands." An Essen police spokesperson told ESPN FC that a German citizen with a Russian

Nigeria's John Obi Mikel reveals father kidnapped before World Cup clash vs. Argentina

Image
MOSCOW -- Nigeria captain John Obi Mikel faced Argentina last Tuesday in the knowledge that his father was being held for ransom, but did not tell anyone about it as the kidnappers threatened to shoot "instantly" if authorities were informed. Mikel told KweséESPN that he received a call from the kidnappers four hours before kickoff in the decisive World Cup clash in St Petersburg, and they demanded N10 Million ($28,000 US) for the safe return of his father, Pa Michael Obi. The elder Obi was on his way to a funeral in south eastern Nigeria from Jos when he was abducted along the Makurdi-Enugu expressway on June 26. He and his driver were rescued by police, after a "gun duel," on July 2, nearly a week after the kidnapping. Mikel's father was then taken to hospital for treatment, with family sources telling KweséESPN that the elderly man had been tortured and required multiple stitches. He returned to hospital on Tuesday after some of the sutures b

Arsenal wrap up signing of Sokratis Papastathopoulos from Borussia Dortmund

Arsenal have completed a deal for Borussia Dortmund centre-back Sokratis Papastathopoulos for an undisclosed fee. The Gunners reportedly paid around £16 million for the 29-year-old Greece international, who had a year left on his Dortmund contract and signs on a long-term deal.Papastathopoulos, who will wear the No. 5 shirt, becomes new head coach Unai Emery's third signing after right-back Stephan Lichtsteiner arrived on a free transfer from Juventus and goalkeeper Bernd Leno joined from Bayer Leverkusen. The Gunners are also expected to finalise a deal for Sampdoria's defensive midfielder Lucas Torreira as well after his World Cup campaign with Uruguay. Papastathopoulos adds further experience to Arsenal's back four and had been identified as a target by head of recruitment Sven Mislintat before Emery took over. The Greece international also adds to the team's contingent of former Dortmund players, with Mislintat having already helped orchestrate the si

Thailand youth soccer team missing in cave is found by rescuers, not safe yet

Image
MAE SAI, Thailand -- Rescuers found all 12 boys and their soccer coach alive deep inside a partially flooded cave in northern Thailand late on Monday, more than a week after the team disappeared and touched off a desperate search that drew international help and captivated the nation. Chiang Rai provincial Gov. Narongsak Osatanakorn said the 13 were in the process of being rescued, but he cautioned that they were not out of peril yet. "We found them safe. But the operation isn't over," he said in comments broadcast nationwide.Rescue divers had spent much of Monday making preparations for a final push to locate the lost soccer players, ages 11 to 16, and their 25-year-old coach. They disappeared when flooding trapped them after entering the Tham Luang Nang Non cave on June 23. Anmar Mirza, a leading American cave rescue expert, said many challenges remain for the rescuers. He said the primary decision is whether to try to evacuate the boys and their coach or

Colombia hopeful James will overcome calf injury to face England

Image
Colombia coach Jose Pekerman remains hopeful James Rodriguez will play a part in Tuesday's round-of-16 tie against England at Spartak Stadium in Moscow. The 26-year-old playmaker is a doubt to feature after not training since he picked up a muscular problem during Thursday's 1-0 win over Senegal. James was substituted in the 30th minute of his team's final Group H game and tests done on Saturday showed the Bayern Munich loanee had minor swelling but no serious injury to his right calf. "We've had the good news of the MRI scan results," Pekerman said in Monday's news conference. "He doesn't have a serious tear. Neither big nor serious. He's made a lot of progress. We have a day and a half to monitor his recovery. As always, we hope that he can be with us for what remains [of the tournament]." The Golden Boot winner with six goals in the 2014 World Cup when Colombia reached the quarterfinals for the first time in their histor

Nine films you should probably check out this July

Image
A Whitney Houston doc, an Icelandic thriller and an anime romantic drama – just a few of the titles you should check out this month Ant-Man and the Wasp Avengers: Infinity War ended with as dark and thrilling a cliffhanger as a blockbuster has ever delivered: the Mad Titan Thanos snapped his fingers and killed half of all living beings in the universe in a crazed attempt at achieving “balance” – and inspired a new meme with the vanishing Spider-Man’s “Mr. Stark, I don’t feel so good.” Don’t expect any answers about what happens next from Marvel Studios’ new film, however. Ant-Man and the Wasp is set before Thanos killed half the universe, and, just like its heroes, it’s a decidedly small-scale affair. Scott Lang (Paul Rudd), who stole a suit that can shrink him to the size of an ant or blow him up to become a giant, teams up with Evangeline Lilly’s Wasp to track down a criminal who can phase through walls. Early word is that it’s a ligh
