Man United's Zlatan Ibrahimovic out for one month - Jose Mourinho

Image
Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho has said Zlatan Ibrahimovic will be out for one month with a "recurrence" of his knee injury. Ibrahimovic was not included in the squad for United's 0-0 draw at home to Southampton on Saturday and Mourinho told the BBC after the game that the 36-year-old striker, who missed seven months before returning to action in November, is set for another spell on the sidelines. "It's the same knee, it's the knee with an incredible problem," he said. "A [36]-year-old man -- a lion, like you say he's a real lion -- but not easy and now he's had a little recurrence and one month out." Romelu Lukaku also suffered a head injury during the game and, asked by BT Sport if that meant he only had Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford as options at striker, he replied: "Yeah." United host Derby County in the FA Cup on Friday, and then have 10 days off before hosting Stoke City. The Champions Leagu...

Man United's Jose Mourinho: Romelu Lukaku tired but I can't rest him

Image
MANCHESTER -- Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has admitted Romelu Lukaku is "tired" but insists he cannot rest his star striker. Lukaku has scored four goals in his last 19 games after starting his United career with 11 in his first 10 appearances. The Belgium international has also been partially to blame for goals United have conceded against Manchester City and Burnley as Mourinho's team have struggled to defend set-pieces. Lukaku has played every minute of United's 20 Premier League games so far this season and started 27 of their 30 games in all competitions. Mourinho said the 24-year-old is running on empty but, asked whether he could afford to give the frontman a rest, he replied: "No, I can't." He told a news conference on Friday: "First of all, people don't have to be grateful to Romelu. I have to be, not you, not the supporters, not the pundits. I have to be. "I think for a striker, any player, he's abso...

Apple's iPhones slowed to tackle ageing batteries

Image
Apple has confirmed the suspicions of many iPhone owners by revealing it does deliberately slow down some models of the iPhone as they age. Many customers have long suspected that Apple slows down older iPhones to encourage people to upgrade. The company has now said it does slow down some models as they age, but only because the phones' battery performance diminishes over time. Apple said it wanted to "prolong the life" of customers' devices. The practice was confirmed after a customer shared performance tests on Reddit, suggesting their iPhone 6S had slowed down considerably as it had aged but had suddenly sped up again after the battery had been replaced. "I used my brother's iPhone 6 Plus, and his was faster than mine? This is when I knew something was wrong," wrote TeckFire. Technology website Geekbench then analysed several iPhones running different versions of the iOS operating system and found some of them did indeed appear to ...

Jerusalem UN vote: Trump threatens US aid recipients

Image
US President Donald Trump has threatened to cut off financial aid to countries that back a United Nations resolution opposing the recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital. Earlier this month, Mr Trump took that step amid international criticism. "They take hundreds of millions of dollars and even billions of dollars, and then they vote against us," he told reporters at the White House. "Let them vote against us. We'll save a lot. We don't care." His comments come ahead of a UN General Assembly vote on a resolution opposing any recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital. The draft resolution does not mention the US, but says any decisions on Jerusalem should be cancelled. Earlier, US ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley warned member states that President Trump had asked her to report on "who voted against us" on Thursday. The status of Jerusalem goes to the heart of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Israel occupied t...

Bitcoin Cash deals frozen as insider trading is probed

Image
One of the US's leading crypto-currency exchanges is carrying out an insider trading investigation. Coinbase fears its own workers may have exploited its move into Bitcoin Cash - a spin-off of the original Bitcoin. The San Francisco-based firm announced the move after Bitcoin Cash's price jumped. Coinbase began letting its users  buy, sell, send and receive Bitcoin Cash  on Tuesday in a surprise decision but has temporarily suspended trade. The company's chief executive intervened after several market watchers posted allegations of illegal activity on social media sites. Brian Armstrong responded that he had repeatedly warned his staff not to disclose its launch plans to family or friends or to trade in the digital asset themselves. "It appears the price of Bitcoin Cash on other exchanges increased in the hours before our announcement,"  he wrote on the news site Medium . "If we find evidence of any employee or contractor violating our polici...

Amazon backs down in Google streaming spat

Image
Amazon has started selling Google's Chromecast devices two years after it originally removed them from its store. Amazon said it removed them to end customer confusion about which services were available on which device. Analysts said it was because they let people watch services that competed with Amazon's Prime Video. Google retaliated by blocking access to YouTube on some Amazon gadgets and threatening further restrictions. In September, Google stopped YouTube playing on the Amazon Echo Show. It said it took the step because the way Amazon got the video-sharing service working on the device was "broken". It also threatened to stop Amazon Fire TV sticks getting access to YouTube from January 2018. 'Productive discussions' The search giant said it took the decisions because of a lack of "reciprocity" by Amazon. In response, Amazon criticised Google saying its actions hurt customers of both firms. The row is also believed to have been...

Bailly's prolonged absence underlines Man United's injury woes this season

Image
Eric Bailly's ankle injury, which could sideline him for three months, is a major problem for Jose Mourinho and Manchester United. After being without his best player, Paul Pogba, for two months, this long-term injury to another key member of the squad is a huge blow. The manager loves to find an excuse for his failings but it would be unfair not to acknowledge that United have been unfortunate when it's come to injuries this season. Rivals Manchester City have had their most important players, Kevin De Bruyne and David Silva, fit for every Premier League game this season, while Pogba has missed morethan half United's league matches. Mourinho's back line has been hit with injuries throughout the course of the season too, with Chris Smalling and Phil Jones, the latter in particular, again proving they're made out of glass. But the repeated injuries to Bailly have been the most damaging. The Ivorian may have an unconventional approach to defending, o...

Oscar Pistorius hurt in prison fight in South Africa

Image
Former South African athlete Oscar Pistorius has been hurt in a prison brawl, less than two weeks after his sentence for the killing of girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp was more than doubled. The disgraced Paralympian was allegedly involved in a fight over the use of a public phone, a prison department spokesman told the BBC. Pistorius, jailed for 13 years and five months, sustained a bruise, he added. No other serious injuries were reported, the spokesman said. "It is alleged that he was involved in an altercation with another inmate over the use of a public phone in the special care unit where both offenders are detained at Attridgeville Correctional Centre," the spokesman, Singabakho Nxumalo, added. The department has launched an investigation, in terms of standard procedure, to "establish the facts and to ensure that appropriate action is taken as incidents of assaults are not allowed", he said. The brawl took place on 6 December, 10 days after So...

Tractor driver destroys six speed cameras on Germany rampage

Image
Police say a tractor driver who went on a rampage in Germany knocked down six speed cameras, causing hundreds of thousands of euros worth of damage. Police say the 63-year-old intentionally aimed at the cameras in the small town of Gernsheim in the Hesse region on Monday night and Tuesday morning. The cameras were several miles apart in the town on the Rhine river, 50km (30 miles) from Frankfurt. The man's motive is not yet clear. A police spokesman said the driver had no alcohol in his system. However it is unlikely that he had been issued with a ticket when previously driving the tractor, which could only drive at six km/h (4mph). Police said the man would be charged with criminal damage.

Egypt singer jailed for 'inciting debauchery' in music video

Image
A court in Egypt has reportedly jailed for two years a singer who appeared in a music video in her underwear while suggestively eating a banana. Shaimaa Ahmed, a 25-year-old known professionally as Shyma, was arrested last month after the video sparked outrage in the conservative country. On Tuesday, she was found guilty of inciting debauchery and publishing an indecent film, local media said. The video's director was also sentenced to two years in prison in absentia. Shyma had apologised before her arrest to people who took the video for the song, I Have Issues, "in an inappropriate way". "I didn't imagine all this would happen and that I would be subjected to such a strong attack from everyone," she wrote on her now-deleted Facebook page. New York bombing suspect Akayed Ullah warned Trump on Facebook

Image
The man who faces terror charges over Monday's bus terminal bombing in New York posted a warning to President Donald trump just before the attack. "Trump you failed to protect your nation," it read. The post by Akayed Ullah was revealed in charges filed by federal prosecutors on Tuesday. They say the 27-year-old Bangladeshi immigrant carried out the bombing in support of the Islamic State group. He wounded himself and three others in Monday morning's attack. Mr Ullah is accused of blowing up a crude device strapped to his body in an underpass at Manhattan's Port Authority Bus Terminal during the rush hour. The New York Police Department (NYPD) tweeted that he was facing state charges including criminal possession of a weapon, supporting an act of terrorism and making a "terroristic threat". The federal charges, announced later on Tuesday, include providing material support to a foreign terrorist organisation, using a weapon of mass des...

Global recall of Lactalis baby milk over salmonella fears

Image
French baby milk formula maker Lactalis has ordered a global product recall over fears of salmonella contamination. Health authorities in France said 26 infants in the country have become sick since early December. The recall affects products and exports to countries including Britain, China, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sudan. It covers hundreds of baby milk powder products marketed globally under the Milumel, Picot and Celi brands. Lactalis is one of the world's biggest dairy producers. Company spokesman Michel Nalet told AFP "nearly 7,000 tonnes" of production may have been contaminated, but the company is currently unable to say how much remains on the market, has been consumed or is in stock. Lactalis believes the salmonella outbreak can be traced to a tower used to dry out the milk powder at its factory in the town of Craon in northwest France, according to AFP. All products made there since mid-February have been recalled and the company said precautio...

Guardiola hits back at Mou penalty gripe: 'We won because we were better'

Image
MANCHESTER -- Pep Guardiola insisted that Manchester City won the derby because they were better in response to comments from Jose Mourinho, who said his side had deserved a penalty. City moved 11 points clear of their rivals after a 2-1 win at Old Trafford, where they had 65 percent possession and nearly twice as many shots. Mourinho claimed United should have been awarded a penalty when Ander Herrera was booked for diving after a challenge from Nicolas Otamendi and said it was the second successive derby at home where they were denied by the referee not awarding the spot kick. "Last season was the same. We won because we were better. In all departments we were better," Guardiola told a news conference. On the penalty decision, he added: "For me it is not a penalty first of all because the intention of Otamendi is not to bring him down. "When a team has the courage to have 65-70-75 percent ball average possession it is because it is an honest team....

Bitcoin futures trading begins on CBOE exchange in Chicago

Image
Bitcoin has begun trading on a major exchange for the first time. It launched on the CBOE Futures Exchange in Chicago at 23:00 GMT Sunday, allowing investors to bet on whether Bitcoin prices will rise or fall. In the lead-up to its futures debut, the value of the digital currency has surged. Bitcoin's introduction to the CBOE has been seen by some as a step towards legitimising the currency. The move is expected to be followed next week by a rival listing on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange. Anticipation of the first mainstream listings have helped the controversial currency soar past $10,000 and then over $17,000 on Thursday before retreating. Bitcoin was trading at about $15,230 on Monday, according to Coindesk.com . Nick Colas, of Data Trek research, said the futures listings gave Bitcoin "legitimacy - it recognises that it's an asset you can trade". Futures are a type of derivative contract that allows trading based on movements in Bitcoin prices, wi...

Egypt uncovers ancient tombs at Luxor

Image
Archaeologists in Egypt have displayed items, including a mummy, from one of two previously unexplored tombs in the ancient Nile city of Luxor. The mummy is believed to be that of a senior official from Egypt's "New Kingdom", about 3,500 years ago. Other items included figurines, wooden masks and richly coloured wall paintings. The tombs lie in the Draa Abul Naga necropolis, an area famed for its temples and burial grounds. It is close to the Valley of the Kings where many of ancient Egypt's pharaohs were buried. Egypt's antiquities ministry said that the tombs had been discovered by a German archaeologist in the 1990s, but were kept sealed until recently. The identity of the mummified body is not known but the ministry says there are two possibilities. It could be a person named Djehuty Mes, whose name is engraved on one of the walls, or it could be a scribe called Maati whose name - and the name of his wife, Mehi - are written on funerary c...

What is wrong with Conte and Chelsea?

Image
LONDON, England -- Chelsea's title race is already over, according to Antonio Conte following Chelsea's surprise 1-0 defeat to West Ham United on Saturday afternoon. In fact, he continued, it never really started. "This is the fourth defeat this season in 16 games," said Conte. "When you have this start, it's impossible to think you are in the title race. From experience, if you want to stay in the title race, in the first part of the season you can lose only once or twice." It was an understandable concession. Chelsea are 11 points behind Manchester City ahead of tomorrow's Manchester derby and more to the point, they're not playing well enough to suggest they might overturn that deficit. But in truth, Chelsea's season has been far from disastrous. Amassing 32 points from 16 games is perfectly respectable: two-points-per-game is usually enough to keep a side in the title hunt at this stage of the season. Unfortunately for ...
