One of Japan's largest digital currency exchanges has said it will refund most of the $534m (£380m) worth of virtual assets lost in a hacking attack.

Coincheck has promised to use its own funds to reimburse more than 46bn yen ($423m) to customers who lost their NEM cryptocurrency coins on Friday. The Tokyo-based company suspended trading after detecting "unauthorised access" of its digital exchange. Some 260,000 customers are said to be affected by the reported theft. Coincheck said on Sunday that the amount it has promised to return covers nearly 90% of the 58bn yen worth of NEM coins lost in the attack. After the breach was discovered on Friday, the company froze deposits and withdrawals for all cryptocurrencies except Bitcoin as it assessed its losses in NEM, a lesser-known currency. The stolen Coincheck assets were said to be kept in a "hot wallet", which is a part of the exchange connected to the internet, as opposed to a "cold wallet", where funds are stored securely offline. The company says it has the digital address of where the assets were sent. As many as 10,000 businesses

DR Congo: Several deaths in anti-Kabila protests

Image
At least six people have been killed in widespread protests in the Democratic Republic of Congo, United Nations sources say. Protesters are demanding that President Joseph Kabila - whose expected term of office expired more than a year ago - should step down. Police have used tear gas to disperse protesters in Kinshasa, where UN peacekeepers have been deployed. Similar demonstrations three weeks ago led to a number of deaths. A spokesman for the UN mission to the country said about 50 people were injured in Sunday's clashes and that dozens had been arrested. Jean-Baptise Sondji, a former minister, told AFP he had witnessed the death of a 16-year-old girl outside a church in the Kitambo area of the capital. "An armoured car passed in front of the church. They began firing live bullets, I protected myself... a girl who was at the left side door of the church was hit," he said. The widespread marches had been called for by the country's Catholic Churc

Four cholera deaths in Zimbabwe

Image
At least four people have died and scores of others infected following a cholera outbreak in a town south west of Zimbabwe’s capital Harare. Authorities say the disease outbreak is linked to water shortages in the mining town of Chegutu, but haven’t ruled out a link to the outbreak in neighbouring Zambia, where more than 60 people have died. They say the outbreak is under control, despite the rise in the number of cases. The four deaths include an 80-year-old woman and relatives who came in contact with her remains. So far 22 people are suspected to have contracted the disease, while an isolation zone has been created in Chegutu to nurse the sick. No-one wants a repeat of 2008, when the government was accused of a delayed response that left 4,000 dead and more than 90,000 infected. Health officials say they are on high alert, however Zimbabwe has battled to supply clean waste to its cities as a result of decaying infrastructure for more than a decade. Cholera is a diarrheal di

Martial's winner sees under-par Man United to victory at Burnley

Image
BURNLEY, England -- Three thoughts on Manchester United's 1-0 win vs. Burnley in the Premier League. 1. United struggle but hang on for victory Jose Mourinho asked everyone to forget about Alexis Sanchez and focus on Burnley in his pre-match press conference on Friday and his team, thanks to Anthony Martial's second-half goal, just about managed it at Turf Moor. For the first 45 minutes, barley a thing happened. Ashley Young, back in the United XI after suspension at Luke Shaw's expense, cut inside from left-back to fizz a shot past the far post but that was the sum of the best chances. Paul Pogba did his best to drive everyone else forward but it was a day of frustration for the French midfielder and it seemed as though everyone associated with United was killing time before their new boy arrived. The opening period made it easy to see why Mourinho is so keen to bring Sanchez to Old Trafford but then, just as it looked like United might have frozen i

Brazil declares yellow fever emergency in Minas Gerais

Image
Brazil's south-eastern state of Minas Gerais has declared a public health emergency following a deadly outbreak of yellow fever. At least 15 people have died there since December. Many areas, including the state capital Belo Horizonte, have been affected. A mass vaccination programme is in place in three southern states. But queues have formed outside clinics in Rio and Sao Paulo amid concerns that vaccines could run out. In neighbouring Argentina, there have also been long queues for the vaccine in Buenos Aires and other cities as thousands of prospective tourists prepare to travel to Brazil for carnival. On Tuesday the WHO recommended that travellers to Sao Paulo state get a yellow fever vaccine before visiting. Minas Gerais has been the hardest-hit Brazilian state. In the year up to June last year, 475 cases were confirmed in the state and 162 people died. The health emergency will be in place for six months and will allow local authorities to commission specia

Pope in Peru: Francis speaks out on violence against women

Image
Pope Francis, who is on a visit to Peru, has spoken out about violence against women in Latin America. Speaking at a Mass in the northern city of Trujillo, the Pope called the violence "a plague" that needed to be combated across the region. According to the UN, half of the 25 countries with the largest number of murders of women are in Latin America. The Argentine Pope, 81, is on the second and final leg of a week-long regional tour. "There are so many cases of violence that stay silenced behind so many walls," the Pope said on Saturday. "I'm calling on you to fight against this source of suffering including legislation and a culture that rejects every type of violence." On Thursday, the pontiff arrived in Peru from Chile, where he became embroiled in a row over clerical sex abuse. He drew anger by accusing victims of a paedophile priest of slandering a bishop who they say tried to cover up the priest's crimes.  t the end of his

Jose Mourinho says Sanchez deal 'so close'; Wenger waits on Mkhitaryan

Image
Alexis Sanchez has travelled north to complete his transfer to Manchester United, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger says, while Jose Mourinho insisted the move is "so close." Sanchez was left out of Arsenal's squad for Saturday's 4-1 win over Crystal Palace, and Wenger said after the match he expects the deal to be completed in the next 48 hours. But he reiterated that it will only happen if Arsenal get Henrikh Mkhitaryan in return. "I didn't take him [for the Palace game] because there is a question of him moving to Manchester United. You cannot drive up north and as well play football," Wenger told a news conference. "I expect it to happen maybe, but I cannot announce it. Because in the next 48 hours it will be decided one way or the other... It happens only one way, if the other way happens as well. That's why it takes longer as well because it is coordinated." He also told the BBC: "Sanchez will only happen if Mkhit

Kabul: Afghan forces end Intercontinental Hotel siege

Image
Afghan security forces say they have regained control of a luxury hotel in Kabul after it was stormed by gunmen. At least five civilians were killed and six were injured in the siege, the interior ministry said on Sunday. All three of the attackers have been killed, a ministry spokesman said. More than 150 people were rescued. The gunmen burst into the Intercontinental Hotel on Saturday evening, shooting at guests and staff and detonating grenades. Special forces battled to secure the hotel and rescue people trapped inside, ministry spokesman Nasrat Rahimi said. He added that one foreigner was among those killed. The rescued guests included 41 foreigners. The interior ministry initially said there were four attackers, but a later statement said there were only three. No group has said it carried out the attack, but the Taliban targeted the Intercontinental hotel in 2011. Saturday's siege came just days after the US embassy in Kabul issued a warning about hotels in the

Pele in hospital: Brazil legend 'collapsed with exhaustion'

Image
Pele played in 14 games at World Cup finals, scoring 12 goals, and was awarded the Fifa Golden Ball as the best player at the 1970 tournament Brazil legend Pele is in hospital after collapsing on Thursday with exhaustion. The 77-year-old was due to travel to London this weekend for a dinner held in his honour by the Football Writers Association (FWA). Pele - the only player to win three World Cups - "has undergone a series of tests which appear to point to severe exhaustion", said the FWA. "He is on fluids while doctors monitor his recovery. Thankfully there is no suggestion of anything more serious." Pele has been taken to hospital for kidney and prostate problems in recent years. Widely regarded as the greatest player of all time, he scored 1,281 goals in 1,363 appearances during his 21-year career, including 77 goals in 91 appearances for Brazil. He helped his country win the 1958, 1962 and 1970 World Cups and was named Fifa's Player of the Ce

World superstar Ronaldinho retires from football.

Image
Brazilian World Cup winner Ronaldinho has retired from football, his brother and agent has confirmed. Ronaldinho, 37, has not played for a professional team since leaving Fluminense in 2015. The former Barcelona star, part of the triumphant Brazil 2002 World Cup squad, won the Champions League in 2006 -- a year after having collected the Ballon d'Or. Roberto Assis confirmed the news of his brother's decision in a column for Brazil media outlet O Globo and revealed plans for farewell tribute events following the 2018 World Cup. "He has stopped, it is ended,'' Assis said. "Let's do something pretty big and nice [for his farewell] after the Russia World Cup, probably in August. "We will do various events in Brazil, Europe and Asia and, of course, we are arranging something with the Brazilian team as well.'' Assis, who confirmed sponsors Nike would also be involved in Ronaldinho's farewell events, added: "The fact that he h

Is Zinedine Zidane in danger of Real Madrid exit after Villarreal defeat?

Image
MADRID, Spain -- Real Madrid are officially in crisis after Saturday afternoon's 0-1 La Liga defeat at home to Villarreal, and coach Zinedine Zidane is now in serious danger of losing his job, with his inability to even explain what is going wrong testing the nerves of everyone around the club. Such a situation seemed almost impossible just last August, when Madrid were reigning Spanish and European champions, and Zidane looked to be the perfect manager for the Bernabeu dressing room's mix of experienced stars and talented youngsters. However, the 2017-18 season started badly and has gotten worse. Saturday's embarrassing slip-up means the team has just one win in their past five games, a 3-0 Copa del Rey victory at Segunda side Numancia. Such a record may have club president Florentino Perez thinking of making a change, even with the huge Champions League last-16 first-leg at home to Paris Saint-Germain now just a month away. Villarreal were good value for their

Deadly storm blasts across Europe, killing three

A lorry overturned on a busy road in Switzerland Winter storms are sweeping across western Europe, causing three deaths and widespread disruption. Tens of thousands of people have been affected by power cuts, and air travel has been disrupted. Parks were also closed because of worries over falling tree branches. In Switzerland, strong wind blew a train carriage off its tracks, injuring eight peop

Alvaro Morata 'not lucky' in front of goal, says Antonio Conte

Image
Antonio Conte refused to criticise Alvaro Morata for missing several key chances to score in Chelsea's 2-2 draw with Arsenal, insisting that the striker has simply not been "lucky" in front of goal in recent games. Morata found himself behind the Arsenal defence with only Petr Cech to beat three times at the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday evening, twice missing the target and hitting the third attempt straight at the goalkeeper as Chelsea threatened to score a dramatic winning goal in the final seconds. Conte was visibly frustrated at his team's wastefulness on the touchline, but insisted after the match that Morata will soon rediscover his confidence in front of goal as long as he continues to get himself into scoring positions. "He's not lucky in this period, but he has to continue to work and to improve," Conte told Sky Sports. "For the striker it's very important to score. In this case it's a pity because he had many chanc

South Korea proposes high-level talks with North on Olympics

Image
South Korea has offered high level talks with North Korea on 9 January to discuss its possible participation in the 2018 Winter Olympic Games. It comes after the North's leader Kim Jong-un said he was considering sending a team to Pyeongchang in South Korea for the Games in February. He said the two sides should "urgently meet to discuss the possibility". South Korea's president said earlier he saw the offer as a chance to improve the highly tense relationship. South Korean Unification Minister Cho Myoung-gyon proposed on Tuesday that representatives could meet at Panmunjom, the so-called "truce village". The village, in the heavily guarded demilitarised zone (DMZ) at the border, is where the Koreas have historically held talks. "We hope that the South and North can sit face to face and discuss the participation of the North Korean delegation at the Pyeongchang Games as well as other issues of mutual interest for the improvement of i

TOP STORY: Reds demand 'astronomical' Coutinho fee

Image
The transfer window has only been open for a matter of hours, but Philippe Coutinho's name already looms large. After the summer saga over whether or not Liverpool playmaker Coutinho would join Barcelona, speculation has continued to surround a potential move. And the Telegraph reports that "after Barcelona's presumption they will sign him in this window was taken to extreme levels" when Nike, their kit manufacturer, advertised a Coutinho shirt, Liverpool "will demand an astronomical fee" to even consider a sale. It adds that although the shirt promotion was soon taken down, "the arrogance surrounding the advert fuelled the sense of intrigue." Liverpool, who rejected three big Barcelona offers for Coutinho in the summer, will continue to stand firm after what the Telegraph calls "an extraordinary marketing blunder." Barca fear City, United interest in Umtiti Meanwhile, Barcelona are concerned that Manchester United or
